<p>So I sent in my application early action to Northeastern about a month ago. However, I get a letter from NU telling me that because of my success in in high school, they would be waiving my application fee. </p>
<p>"When you apply to Northeastern online through the Common Application and are prompted to pay the application fee, simply select 'Fee Waiver requested' and we will waive your fee when we receive your application"</p>
<p>First of all, does that mean they have not already gotten my application? I sent in my application a month ago! And is there anyway I can get my seventy dollars back since I already paid it and they are only now telling me I'm getting my fee waived?</p>
<p>do you mind posting your scores/stats? My daughter applied EA and we’re just hoping for a scholarship (the kind that go to the top 25%). TWO of her friends got that letter too, and they’re both going (well, hoping to go) to an ivy. I think they might both be National Merit Finalists. I’m wondering if that’s who got the letter?</p>
<p>As for the refund of the fee, good luck with it! That was a pretty big fee to have to pay and then get that letter.</p>
<p>Got the same letter today, so I sent an email to admissions just now asking about a refund, so I guess I’ll find out in the next day or two. </p>
<p>viktoria, I think the letter might have been for national merit possibilities. I was only a commended scholar or whatever its called, but the letter does specifically mention the national merit/national achievement scholarship for finalists. I think the mailing may be based on just a psat score range, as I don’t think a college could have any more info about a student until they actually apply. </p>

<p>Thanks shaedow - I just got worried because the more applications they get in from national merit people, the lower those others go in the percentiles! Luckily, my daughter did a lot better on the SATs (and particularly on the ACTs) than she did on the PSATs … but these next 2-3 weeks are brutal for us, waiting for the admissions notification! </p>
<p>Based on what I read here, she would have qualified for a good # last year but it does seem like the bar is raised every year. So we’ll see … hopefully we won’t have to wait too long.</p>
<p>I guess shaedow pretty much answered your question. The letter did mention National Merit stuff and if you qualify for that you could get full tuition but I haven’t really looked into that scholarship, perhaps I should. Anyway, here are my stats if you still need them.</p>
<p>680 M 680 CR 740 W
3rd in a class of about 360 with a 3.833 unweighted GPA.
Have taken only honors classes with 1 AP sophomore year, 2 junior year, and four this year.
I’m in National Honor Society, Math Team, Academic Decathlon, Jazz Band, and I play piano for a church. Might be more about me but I’m feeling a little narcissistic right now and I’m too lazy to think anyway :P</p>
<p>Amasian, I guess it is the national merit then. Funny, because her SATs are similar to yours: 690 M 670 CR 750 W and they didn’t offer HER that waiver! She is #8 in a class of about 350 with honors and AP classes since freshman year (APs started last year, they can’t take them before that at her school). Also, NHS, Spanish NHS, various clubs and varsity athlete, etc. But she got a 191 or so on the PSATs.</p>

<p>I don’t think it has anything to do with national merit because i got the letter, my SAT scores are ok, but not great but my GPA is pretty high. And again, I applied then got the fee waiver letter…hopefully I can get that money back?</p>
<p>Just got an email back from admissions, telling me to email someone else for the refund. It did sound like they would give a refund though, so that’s good.</p>
<p>@victoriag: that sounds very strange to me that your daughter didn’t receive any letters! i can’t imagine what would stop them from doing so, maybe a mailing issue? I also don’t think this concerns National Merit because I only got a 185 on my PSATS. The letter only made a small mentioning of National Merit. I also have yet to call admissions and ask them about the $70. I’ve been pretty busy this week…so many tests! But I’ll keep everyone updated in this thread regarding the issue.</p>

<p>I got the same fee waiver letter about a month and a half ago. I’m pretty sure it had nothing to do with PSATs because i didnt get any sort of national merit anything (i only got 189) and my friend got one two and she was a national merit finalist. i think it had more to do with high school GPA …but i dont know how they would have got that information?</p>
<p>We’re in NJ. And since two of her friends got the letter, if it’s demographics, then she should have been in the right place geographically … but both of them scored above 2200 on the SAT and probably in a similar range on the PSAT. Who knows? :/</p>
<p>Makes sense that it is PSAT or SAT but some seem to have gotten it with lesser #'s. Oh well- the real issue is the stress of waiting the next 2 weeks! It is a nice distraction to discuss this in the mean time… haha :)</p>
