I am doing the Online common app. The other day, I got something in the mail from Rice, saying that they've waived the $60 application fee normally required of all applicants to Rice. They said it had something to do with my AP scores.

How do I make sure they waive it? It just says to apply at commonapp.org

Lol, it's so funny how they find so many reasons to give fee waivers :)
I didn't have to do anything btw, and they still indicated they "received" the application fee when I checked it online.

i got the same letter. i accidentally submitted the payment then contacted the admissions office about it, and they refunded the $60 within the week through a mailed check. Rice is amazing that way - fee waivers, prompt service.

do you guys know of anyother colleges that do this too? i got one from rice, which was really nice...but would be even better if I didnt' have to pay for the other billion :D

Most prestigious schools (and probably many more) offer waivers if you show that you had a testing fee waived (like any College Board or ACT test) or if you can somehow show that you have "need"... that you really can't afford the app fees. This usually involves a letter from your counselor and/or actual forms...

I don't know of many colleges that waive fees based on merit. Many lesser known schools will waive your fee if they want you (Hofstra, RPI, etc).

You have to search around each school's website to find their answers.

I'm pretty sure HYPS and top LACs all offer waivers if you truly need them.
