It is all over the news that many elite universities are recieving many more applications than usual. Why do you think this is? Is it just because more students are applying to more schools? How do you think this will impact admission rates (obviously they will go down, but by what %)?

More people, and our generation has always been told to shoot for the starzzz~
That, and we’re generation narcissism for a reason. Why shouldn’t such amazing, wonderful snowflakes apply to the most elite institutions?

Some students seem to think it is a lottery that everyone can play. Elite schools do have a lottery aspect to them, but only for the very well qualified.

Yes, as an interviewer for an ivy I’m seeing way more unqualified applicants than I saw in the past. The schools have reached out to a broader audience here and abroad. They want representation from more minorities and more socioeconomic classes, more countries, more everything!

The results are good-- they are getting these things-- but they are also getting many more applications from those without a real idea of what it takes to get in

This is having a dramatic effect on acceptance rates, we’ll see top ivies edge towards 5% and mid tier go below 10%. In addition to all of the unqualified applicants there are more qualified ones.

No longer can a kid would good stats and nothing else special go ivy.

"How do you think this will impact admission rates (obviously they will go down, but by what %)? "

Time to pull out the math skills, OP. Admission rate = no. of accepts divided by no. of applications.

Since schools can’t physically admit more kids, the no. of accepts stays static. Increase the denominator, rate decreases. By how much? Well, what is the denominator?

HAHAHAHA. I LOVE IT! Competition. It’s going to ROCK this generation.

It’s an ongoing cycle. When students see how competitive things are, they’re going to apply to more places to increase their chances of getting into somewhere. Then the NEXT batch of students will apply to even more places. It’s only going to continue like this for the next decade or so.
The world population is already 7 billion. And it’s only increasing.

It’s so exciting to see how competitive this world has become. It’s a NEW age!

^ Exactly. Population is increasing; it’s not hard to predict that the number of applicants will keep increasing too in a time when kids are taught to go to college in order to find a good job.
