Application is "on hold"

A departmental UW employee inadvertently told me that my application was "on hold."

I applied November 27th (before the priority admission deadline). I thought I was relatively competitive (Valedictorian, 4.0 GPA, Running Start with 39 college credits, in-state, passion in one EC area)...but now I just don't know.

Applied to two majors...but they didn't have the asterisks indicating that they were super-competitive.

Does anybody know, or can hazard a guess, what "on hold" might mean?

What is the message you get online?

Online, it currently reads "Your application is awaiting review."

It has been this way for over a month!! All of my ACT/SAT/SAT II scores and transcripts were immediately received and noted within 5-7 days of submission on my MyUW page.

This is nerve-wracking!

did you ask what "on hold" means? What did they say?

Yep...that was the first thing out of my mouth. She said she really didn't know and didn't have complete access to the information. She said it possibly was sent to the Chemistry department for review since the major was competitive. Although, I didn't consider Biochemistry to be one of the "competitive" majors (think: back to the majors with asterisks on the pulldown menu on the online application)...like those majors, for instance, in Engineering.

??

You know, that does not make any sense. I would call back in a week if your status has not changed and ask to talk to someone who knows for sure where your application is. It sounds like the person you talked to was just guessing.

orangecoloredsky, I'm in the same situation only I submitted my app Nov. 30th.

c0nnection, we are exactly in the same boat.

and i never thought about calling them except i did once about my transcript since they hadn't received mine after two months i submitted.

what # did you call? I'd like to see if I'm on hold also because my status is the same and I submitted mine early

c0nnection, magicalchris, and xaerial,

Are your stats similar to mine? Running Start/dual enrollment? In-state or out? To which majors did you apply? I'm trying to find a pattern...

I'm somewhat relieved to find others in the same situation.

-orangecoloredsky

U of Wash has been really weird about admissions. I sent in my application three weeks ago, and then I got my acceptance letter yesterday! Meanwhile, I have a friend who sent in his application in November and still hasn't heard from them. And he is a competitive applicant who I am sure would get in. How are they reviewing applications, anyway? The picture I have in my head is that the applications are in one big pile, and all the new ones are at the top so they get reviewed first...

Orangecoloredsky (and everyone else), I don't think you have to worry about not getting in. I am thinking that maybe UW is just a little disorganized at the moment and you will get your acceptance letter eventually.

catsushi, wow, three weeks. how lucky you are!

orange, i am one full year running start(one math in junior year). in-state, put down biochem in application.

yeah as catsushi said, we shouldn't worry too much about it. i know a lot of people in this situation. we'll give them more time and see.

My sister (she goes to UW) says that admissions has a chart they use to decide acceptances, based on GPA and the SAT/ACT score. Then they decide from there. I don't know if that fits into the acceptance dilemmas?

A chart based on SAT/GPA? Are you serious?

So much for "hollistic reviews."

^ I think UW stopped using such a chart ~ 2 years ago.

Maybe you are right, then. My sibling is graduating from UW this year, after all, so that could be true. Still, plenty of colleges use some kind of "chart" to assess students based on certain criteria, so maybe UW has a new system.

I have to agree with BubbleTea.

I'm also pretty certain UW no longer uses selection indexing exclusively.

UW definitely moved to holistic admissions this year - no more charts.

Orange - this employee could have meant "on hold" in the sense that it's not moved into the review pile yet. My son, also with competitive stats, has been in the "complete file - awaiting review" pile since the message last changed on 12/20. He applied the same time you did. I wouldn't worry, as long as you were not told your file was incomplete or something.

@orangecoloredsky

I'm applying as a freshman neurobiology major. I honestly thought I was very well qualified (full IB, good gpa, scores, ec).

There's gotta be some standard of GPA and SAT though to maintain reputation and prestige of schools.

even though i freakin' bombed my SAT
