So recently, right before the Early Action deadline, the Common App for counselors and teachers to submit their part of the application has been not operating correctly according to my guidance counselor. She did not want to delay my application by waiting for Common App to start working again, so she decided to mail the materials she had to submit. She gathered my two letters of recommendations from my teachers and sent them with the transcript and school report and mailed them out

HOWEVER, University of Notre Dame's Assign Recommenders page says only 1 letter of recommendation is allowed with my application. But my counselor mailed in both. I currently don't know what to do and am worried this will influence my acceptance because I did not follow the rules even though this was my counselor's doing.

What do I do?
Will I be penalized for this mishap?

If I’m not mistaken. ND asks for only one letter, therefore only one will show and I believe they are taken alphabetically from Common App. So you should be fine.

My son is a current freshman. His high school had a malfunction with Naviance and accidentally sent an additional teacher recommendation to all of the schools he was applying to. His guidance counselor wrote a letter to ND about the mix up and also called his ND admissions rep. The rep told the guidance counselor that it was not a problem. You might consider having your counselor do the same thing.

My son is also a current freshman. His school used Naviance and he had two rec letters that were submitted. Contacting your admissions rep, I imagine you will be told it is sine (just like Husker7 above). In fact, I recall an admissions presentation where one of the counselors or the director of admissions (we sat through a couple of pre football game sessions) indicated they were not going to ding you for two letters. They are trying to avoid getting too many letters. I think they understand many high schools encourage students to have two letters submitted.

My daughter is a freshman as well. Sent two teacher letters. Subsequent to being deferred, sent an additional letter, though not from a teacher, but from someone unrelated to school.

This year the common application program has been plagued with problems (you can just use google and find a lot of articles). I don’t think a second letter of recommendation is a problem though – in fact I bet a lot of people send two. I think it only gets to be an issue when you start sending a ridiculous number of recommendations all saying the same thing. If you have any concerns you should contact admissions but I really don’t think two is a problem.
