Application number out yet?

harvard and princeton have already released the number of apps they received this year (30K+ and 26K, respectively)

hurry up, yale!!

Considering the fact that many people STILL do not have eli accounts…I would project at least 30k applications this year but we’ll see when they FINALLY release numbers.

i wonder why more people dont apply to princeton

is that considered higher than any previous year?

More people have never applied to Princeton. As far back as I can remember, it has always run a few thousand behind the H/Y numbers (and Y has always been slightly behind H). Why? Who knows? Less name recognition. Urban locations are more popular these days. Has a somewhat offputting preppy/WASP/elitist image, more so than H/Y. Associated with a boring style of basketball. None of that is really justified anymore or actually makes a great deal of sense, but the combination is probably enough to cut down applications slightly.

I always found Princeton’s basketball style – based on player screens and inside passes rather than fastbreaks and slam dunks – to be entertaining. But I don’t think it had any influence on their application totals. :)

Yale usually reports on the early side, generally before Harvard and almost always before Princeton. Not this year – no official word yet.

UChicago, Brown, Princeton, and I think Stanford have all reported blockbuster increases of 20+ percent. (Chicago saw a 42% surge – unbelievable.) Harvard had a more modest increase of 5%.

Surprisingly, we do know that Yale’s early action numbers were down 5%. Could this be the harbinger of a lackluster year, comparatively? Might Yale be delaying a bit as it prepares to “spin” its announcement?

If Yale apps were flattish this year, it would put them at the same level of Princeton – appx 26K. It would be a little embarrassing, I think, as Yale still has the EA arrow in its recruitment quiver, unlike Princeton.

natsherman, I agree. My guess is that either:

– The number is really big and they’re still counting.
– The number is disappointing and they’re practicing spinning.

How hard can it be to count 'em up?

I don’t think the app numbers will have increased exponentially, though of course it’s possible. Frankly, there’s really no indication that it would do so, apart from the increase in apps of other schools. Just look at EA numbers, and, if this delay in release means anything at all.

I hope to God that it is around 26,000 or less.

Well, if they did not get many then that leaves no explanation as to why Eli accounts have not been sent out to so many applicants (including myself). Even if they were attempting to do some kind of ‘spin’ they would not have said that everyone should have received an Eli account by 1/20/10 and then not sent it out to many applicants. I guess all we can do is wait and hope it is low though…
