Application on hold for Temple?

Hello, I applied to Temple University OOS and Early Action on 10/20. I just checked my application portal and it says my application is put on hold for further review and they will get back to me by April. Is this good or bad because I applied to Temple as a safety school, especially since my guidance counselor said I should get good money from them. My gpa is a 3.42 and SAT is a 1230. I am a varsity track athlete, I volunteer at the preschool at my church, and at this music festival, and I have a job. I know these aren’t amazing EC’s but my guidance counselor said I was alright because of my schedule. Could this affect my admission to Temple since I was put on hold? Or should I do anything to help my admission chances?

Since you weren’t accepted now, you really can’t wait until April. So, yes, there are a few things you can do, including, but not limited to:

  1. Did you visit Temple? Did you show interest? If not, do so. I might also ask your GC for their advice on whether you should contact admissions directly. Tell them you saw you are deferred until April. What can you do to improve your chances. Ask that. Have your GC send your mid year grades.
  2. Meanwhile, find yourself a few more schools which you and your GC agree are more likely to accept you AND those who are likely to give you $$$ If that’s something you are seeking. And. You will need to do this ASAP. With the holidays coming up, high schools will close, and there are a LOT of 1/1 deadlines, which really mean you have to ask your GC now to send the necessary documents. (and allow for the SAT or ACT scores to be sent from the testing agencies etc. (my D19 has a 12/15 deadline, so you may find schools that you need to act on fast).

And, take a breath. Think of this as an opportunity to expand your base.

Good luck. Everything will work out.

I’d call admissions to see why the application is on hold (ex, is your file missing something? were you deferred EA?).
FWIW I see Temple as more of a match than a safety for you.

I would ask, too. Also, Temple is hot right now as far as I can tell and they are likely getting a slew of applicants and can be picky. I would see them as a match, not a safety, too, as you fit right into their average GPA and SAT at around the 50th %ile mark. They are probably just indicating that you are not EA material. I would do some homework on the rest of your guidance counselor’s recommendations. Her information might be old. Temple USED to be more of an easy admit school but that has changed very rapidly as large, urban universities have become more popular. Some guidance counselors are just not very realistic - in both directions. Me and my college boyfriend had the same exact HS GPA and same exact SAT scores. My counselor told me I would not be able to go to a 4 year school and should start at a junior college. His counselor told him he should apply to Harvard. We both ended up at the same school that, at the time, was ranked #19 nationally in its category (national liberal arts colleges).

Is it possible your counselor sees you as filling geographic diversity?

This isn’t a bad thing my application was put on hold too I’m not sure if it is the same situation but I was on the waiting list and I got a response back around March or April a letter of acceptance and my gpa & sat were both considerably lower then yours.

Last year my daughter was put on hold mid-December. She was accepted March 28. Very similar GPA & SAT score as you. She applied to 9 schools, was accepted to all 9 and Temple was the last acceptance. She chose Temple. You will probably get in but may have to wait until March. Good luck!

@PM0019 was your daughter able to secure university housing? My daughter was put on hold the other day and I have concerns about the April notification. Just wondering if she would still be able to get housing with such a late acceptance?
