Unlike previous years, we have to complete our applications before we can apply for housing.

Since school is out now, I can't get my official high school transcript or ask for teacher's recommendation. Has anyone tried submitting an incomplete applications and come back to finish it later? I'm applying to Plan II too, if that matters.

If I wait till school starts almost a month later to finish and submit my application, I don't think I'll have much of a shot at San Jac or Duren.

After you apply, you can check an application status web page that shows what is in and what is not in, so you can track your status to see if your apps are in, if your essays are in, if your transcript is in, etc. You definitely can submit things piece by piece. You submit your stuff on your own electronically and your school submits your transcript and your references submit their letters over the electronic UT system - your applicatoin would always be incomplete at first, with parts rolling in piece by piece.

Your question is a good one. I was assuming that if you completed the application (including the essays) it will count as having "submitted your application" and you could file your housing request. Otherwise, your "date and time student applied for housing" rank is out of your control.

The housing web site says

See what they say.

Here's the URL for all of the contact information for housing. They have been good about sending email answers back.

The new process is a HUGE change for incoming students. Even if students lose control as to when they may apply for housing....remember that all students will be following the same process. There is plenty of housing available for students who want to live on campus.

All inquiries about whether or not the admission application is complete must go to the Office of Admissions. Housing can help with housing questions.

The question is, once you have submitted your application, your essays, and your application fee online, are you allowed to apply for housing?

No. The list of items needed to complete an application is a good bit longer than that. To complete your admissions application, all items listed as application requirements (link to How to Apply - Freshmen | Be a Longhorn | UT Austin) must have arrived and been processed by the Office of Admissions. Recommended/suggested items do not affect completion. Items submitted electronically appear online in a couple of days; items submitted by mail can take two weeks or more to be processed and appear online. The admissions office is planning to send an email to let you know when your admissions application is complete.
