My son is applying ED for biology with an okay GPA (3.8 unweighted).
He took BOTH the SAT and the ACT.
Do we need to report both scores? Is it dishonest to leave the lower score out?
He got a 1990 on SAT and composite score of 31 on the ACT
But we heard that SLO looks at mostly math and reading on the ACT and he scored a 35 on each of those.
We are thinking it would be better to just report ACT. Is that okay?
And advice would be very much appreciated

It seems to me there’s no problem with submitting only the ACT even if the SAT was taken. The Admissions web site states “ACT and/or SAT-I test scores are used in the test score field in the freshman admission selection process. ACT is the preferred test for Cal Poly.”

I interpret that to mean you can submit both scores if you want, but submitting just the SAT or the ACT is fine, with the ACT preferred.

With a combined ACT score of 31, your son’s score is considerably higher than the 28 average of Freshmen entering the College of Science and Mathematics in Fall 2012 (who also had an average GPA of 3.90 and SAT of 1264 (math and reading only)).
What I don’t know is how Cal Poly evaluates the scores of the individual components of the ACT. Scores of 35 on Math and Reading are terrific. But a composite score of 31 implies a low score on either Science or English, or both. If the low score is in English and the Science score is OK, then as a prospective Biology major your son should be fine. On the other hand, if he has a really low score in Science, that might raise questions.
