Is it a good idea to send things, like recommendations, before you send the actual application?

Should be fine -- they will put all of your application materials together in one file as they arrive. My S did this in his applications last year (transcripts and test scores arrived before the application, for example) and it worked just fine. Good luck!

Think twice about sending recommendations though. UF doesn't require them this year, and they hate any extra materials that repeat things that your transcript and application already conveyed. Unless you know exactly what is in the recs, you may not want to send them. My guidance counselor stopped me from sending mine.

and what about colleges in general?

You should only send them what they ask for. If they say one rec, only send one. Don't give them extra stuff unless you feel like it is necessary.

dvm258, I was refering to my original question.

Of course it is ok. They put it in a file for you. It is perfectly fine for you to send it now.
