Application Questions

I saw that j07 had started a thread like this in the Yale forum, and thought that it was a great idea!
Because there have been so many threads asking the same application- and essay-related questions, I thought it would be a good idea to make just 1 thread where people could ask all of those questions without having to start a new thread!
So, ask away--we EDers are more than happy to help!

Here's a compilation of some answers we've agreed to:

Resumes should be on longer than 1 or 2 pages, and should have your full name, birthdate, and SSN.

"Favorite recording" can be basically anything (album, song, book on tape, etc.) and you should choose the favorites you really like--they are probably not of much consequence.

If you use your own quote, include it at the top of the essay, with the author, if possible.

You can submit the app online up to 11:59 PM EST on 1/1.

Try to keep the summers essay no longer than 300 words.

For other application parts (recs, scores, etc.), the deadline is somewhat lenient.

If doing the Princeton app, the "may be shorter" for the 2nd essay means that it doesn't have to be shorter (i.e. it can be around 500 words, too).

Try to make your essays no longer than 120% of the recommended maximum length (i.e. shorter than 600 words for 500 word essay). (Note: mine was nearly 700 and I got in ED)

I know there are more but I just skimmed over the last few pages of threads and saw what we had talked about. Hope this helps.

so is it okay that my college transcripts will be a couple of weeks late? they closed two weeks early and opened two weeks late

yes, as long as your application is in on time.

Yay I started a trend!!

bump--ppl who are about to ask questions, please check the above list first!

bump
though it's useless :(

Could an EDer read over my essay? That would be super. And for the quote, my essay makes it pretty obvious who said what, do I really need to still put the quote on top?

I will read over it if you want.

And there's no need to put the quote on the top.

If you chose your own quote, you definitely need to put it at the top though. I guess that's kind of obvious.

Quick question. My second essay is 412 words. Bad?

No, it's fine.
As long as every word contributes to the essay as a whole.

Submitted!! Are there any things due today besides the Common App and Supplement? Is there some financial aid thing that I should get in the mail?

I'm pretty sure that Princeton wants the FAFSA and CSS and all those other ASDLDKFJ and ASLFDAKJDFHLLA-type forms as soon as possible, but the financial aid application deadline is February 1 and the FAFSA deadline is April 15. So nope, I think if you've submitted the Common App and supplement you're good to go. Congrats on submitting!!

shoot...my resume didn't have my dob or ssn, but it did have my address, phone number, e-mail, and school. is that ok?

yale (and yes, yale is not princeton, but still...) doesn't want your SSN. So I think name, school, and address is good enough.

If you postmark the "What Else...?" form on January 3rd (since post offices are closed tomorrow), will it get there in time to be reviewed? What if you pay for overnight Fed-Ex? Or is it just too late period?

I thought that you could download something onto the What Else form and submit it that way and unfortunately such is not the case.

I know what you mean. I hope that we can mail stuff out. I think as long as they've opened a file for you by the deadline, you can still send stuff in a day or two after the deadline, because they're still sorting mail, and aren't even reviewing anything yet. I have until the end of January to send any supplementary material to Princeton (I'm ED deferred). So I think you're all right.

as long as your app and sup are in you should be fie with the stragaller mail, they know about the post offic prob

lol my resume had/lacked the same info are yours, sunny, and I got in. so you should be fine.
