This is probably a rookie question, but my son applied early to 7 schools and every single one sent him a confirmation of application received within 24 hours, except UofM still has not sent an email. Is this typical? I realize they get lots of apps, but so do the other schools he has applied to. He did reach out to the area contact person, who confirmed that he saw the application was submitted, but that UofM had not received the ACT score from college board yet, which was alarming since ACT confirmed to my son it had been sent a couple of days prior. He is now worried that his early app will get rolled over to regular decision and Michigan is a top choice (he is 4th generation legacy but since we are OOS we have heard he may get rolled to regular anyway). Thanks for any input
Colleges may take a little or a very long time to send out application confirmation emails. I know of one poster here in CC whose confirmation email took almost a month to be sent to them. As for the test scores, do you mean the SAT? ACT is not given by the collegeboard. Anywho, test scores may have been already sent by the testing agency, but it’ll take a bit (probably a week?) before it gets to the college, then the colleges themselves select how often to download new score reports: somewhere between once per day and once per week.
Thanks… It is the ACT and I clearly have not been monitoring this stuff - just figured I would ask since there was a Defcon5 after the stress kicked in by my son. I used Collegeboard incorrectly. I read other replies after I posted my question that UofM replied about 8 days later or so. It was just inconsistent with other immediate emails we received… thanks again
Michigan will take longer then the other colleges. Just get used to it. Being OOS doesn’t mean he will get deferred but like 50% seems to get deferred and it seems more the norm. Legacy is looked at but way down the list of importance. Grades, rigor, scores and essay with holistic review. Each application is reviewed like 3 times. It can be a long journey but if accepted it worth the wait.
Also it takes a bit to link the scores to his application. If he didn’t hear back in a week I would call admissions. Think he can check his portal for updates. Here’s some facts from last year https://admissions.umich.edu/apply/freshmen-applicants/selection-process
Think OOS acceptance was around 21 %.
thanks for the info. We knew legacy didnt mean much, but the couselor we met with at the admissions office when we had our tour said that legacy helps as long as the candidate is qualified to attend. His stats are pretty good with a 34 on the ACT, 9 AP courses on his transcript, straight A’s, etc. His extra curriculars are abundant and he is a musician as well - so we will keep our fingers crossed that his essays are compelling enough when read. Thanks again for answering the question.
Look at legacy as a tie breaker. There are studies that legacy students do accept their legacy schools like 80% of the time. So it does mean something. But saying that there are plenty of legacy kids that don’t get in. Even with great grades and scores.
Check naviance at your school to see who got in with what grades and scores.
Michigan can take up to 8 days. Check your spam folder and also any other email you may have used.
My daughters notification went in the spam folder of the email she used to register for a visit. Go figure!
Relax about the match. In over 40 apps we have submitted for all our children, we have never had a mismatch. Full name, city and DOB are used to match records. Think about the redundancy.
