I was admitted regular decision to CAS at NYU. My grades are fine, extracurriculars are fine, everything academically is good.
I’ve had depression and anxiety since fifth grade, and sometimes it gets really bad and I need to take some time off.
I’ve heard of schools rescinding applications for disciplinary reasons, but can a school rescind an application because a student takes some time off for mental health reasons? If I am hospitalized short term for mental health issues, but still graduate on time, can my application be rescinded?
I did not mention on my NYU app that I have a history of mental health issues and I’ve never been hospitalized before. Should I call and ask if this will be an issue? Will they even know if I’ve been hospitalized?
Unless something goes in your transcript about it then it’s unlikely they would know. If you fail a course or take enough time off that you’re unable to graduate or receive disciplinary action then it’s possible. But otherwise I would be shocked. I’d imagine it would be a great breach of confidentiality for them to find out from someone other than yourself.
Imagine the media backlash if a school rescinded admission for a student suffering from mental health issues (but otherwise maintaining the same academic standards etc.).
Take care of yourself!
You won’t be rescinded.
Here’s what you need to do as soon as you get to school, though: Go to the office for students with disabilities. Every school has one. You will need to show proof of your diagnosis from your doctor. The office will ask you what kind of accommodations you think you need. They will write a letter that you need to give to each of your professors. Believe me, professors have more than one student each semester who gives them a letter!
IF you do this, the professors are required to give you accommodations. That could mean turning in homework late, getting help with taking notes, etc. But you must do this at the beginning of the semester. If you wait until you NEED accommodations, it will be too late.
My son and daughter both have issues, and their universities have been great. Each of their schools has a place for students to come and hang out, and eat snacks! My daughter sees a counselor every week, at no extra charge.
My son was seriously enough ill (schizophrenia) that I went with him to talk to his advisor. She was so kind. She even shared that she’d been diagnosed with depression as a teenager! So don’t be afraid to ask for help. The school wants you to succeed. Good luck! Let us know how it goes for you!
Like what other people said, NYU won’t rescind you, but I also want to mention that NYU has some good mental health services I have generalized anxiety disorder, and while I’ve never called the wellness hotline (a 24 hour crisis/mental health help hotline) I have lots of friends who have, and they make it a priority to let you know its a resource (they make you memorize the number during welcome week) There are also free drop-in hours, and they offer lots of mental health services and crisis help. Our disabilities center is also really accommodating.
I’ve found so many friends here who also suffer from stuff, and even more than that, it’s so much easier to talk about mental health stuff here than at home. I’m able to be more open about my anxiety which means I have a bigger support network of friends, which (for me) is vital. NYU (both the school and the environment) will be accommodating and accepting of you and your anxiety/depression.
