Application Status/Decision?

Yeah - I agree.

I applied EA with the online common application and online UDe app and essay. They never did acknowledge that they had my essay. I called them about it the week before the EA deadline and the woman on the phone got very snippy - basically said don't call us - we'll call you if something is missing. Then after I got deferred from EA, I checked the website again and it still said my UDe essay was missing. I called again and this time got someone with decent customer service skills, who actually pulled my file and said - no there is no essay here - please e-mail it to me directly. I did - but even if I had a shot at EA - they really aggravated me because they didn't have a complete file - they were missing my essay and couldn't be bothered to tell me.

Today, a friend called me to tell me she had received an admissions letter yesterday from Delaware. She did the online application and then decided she didn't really want to go there - so she never sent them her SAT's nor her transcript. Now how in the world did they make an admit decision with no SAT's and no transcript?

Just doesn't make sense. It sounds like they were totally overwhelmed this year and couldn't keep up with the applications. Did my friend really get in - or did her name somehow get on someone else's complete file? Who knows! And the College Board thinks they have problems!

I'll say it again - can you imagine what class registration is like is this is a demonstration of the customer service and administrative skills of these people? Scares me!

First, Delaware has ED, not EA, so you couldn't have applied EA.

Second, SAT's come to the school in many forms, not just directly from the College Board. The university requires test scores & transcripts so there is no way they don't have them for your friend. They could have them faxed over from the HS or sent. The wouldn't have admitted a student without those two documents, that's for sure.

Unfortunately, your story is highly unlikely.

Yeah - I saw the typo the next time I logged in and it was too late to edit. Was ED. And I had that experience first hand - so I know it happened.

I have no reason to doubt my gf - and if you knew our school guidance counselor - you would laugh at the possibility that they would have mailed - let alone faxed - anything without a student bugging the heck out of them to do it. I go to a very small girl's school and our guidance counselor is a part-time employee who doesn't give a rat's butt about college applications. We have had to beg to get stuff done and the complaints about things going in late or not at all are more common than not as we all wait in line to see her on the few days that shes in the office.

You can doubt me - no skin off my nose - but I have no reason to doubt my friend's story and i know my first hand experience. Read a few posts up - there's another person here who never paid an app fee who was admitted.

Colleges are made up of human beings who aren't perfect and when faced with stress can make mistakes. When faced with A LOT of stress - they are as capable as the rest of us at making BIG mistakes. If you believe that college admissions offices are never at fault or overwhelmed, then good for you. GGT

So Delaware was your first choice?

At that time yes - we had just done the parents and friends weekend and I never dreamed I'd get into Penn State and that wonderful guidance counselor had told me that I had a better chance of flying than getting into College Park. I thought it was my best shot - they were mytop three and I was told the other two would never happen.

Does anyone else have access to the admitted student sight but have not gotten a letter yet. I'm starting to worry a bit.

Got the paper admissions packet today. UDe def wins for the beauty contest - is a genuine work of art - very classy. Sadly no scholarship money and that is the end of the story for me.

College Park here I come - luckily that's my #1 pick - with the finances to make it the least expensive of all my choices as well.

And for anyone worried about waitlisting etc - I'll be sending my regrets ASAP - don't want to feel I might be blocking anyone from their #1 school!

Good luck all - see you on facebook - and maybe on a road trip or two to see friends at UDe - its a short ride on Amtrak!

P.S. Wealth - if you work for the school or are a grad - you might want to let people know that!

GGT

i got into Udel but not into College Park...is that normal?

GGT, do you mean College Park Maryland? You mentioned Penn State and their main campus is University Park. Just was a bit curious about which school you're choosing over UDel.

making me nervous that I haven't heard from DEl. My friend got in and has similar stats to me. She is sending in that she isn't going cause she got into umich for engineering. Hope I get mine soon and it is good.

Unless you're from far away, we have to start being real here.

They began mailing last monday. They have until April 1st to notify everyone. Everyone who has heard so far has gotten in. Tomorrow is Tuesday. Over a week past March 20. It is not looking very good.

is the thing you said about April 1st true? We HAVE to know by then?

Gummi and Oh - IMHO, this whole process has a subjective x factor that is embedded in the each school's decision process and prob looks very rational to the school - but is invisible to us as applicants.

My top three in order were University of Maryland College Park (my dream school - always wanted to be a Terp), Penn State UP, and U De. My guidance counselor told me UMCP and PSU UP were beyond my reach - so I applied U De ED, but was deferred to RD.

I applied to 9 schools in total - all apps were completed by me during the month of October and if the school offered EA (other than UDe) I took it.

Since I've attended Catholic schools all my life, my "safeties" included 4 catholic colleges with fairly similar selectivity reputations. I received two EA offers with full ride scholarships, the third deferred me to RD and recently wait listed me - and the fourth deferred me from EA and they send RD answers next week - so who knows. But Gummi - talk about a full array of decisions - go figure!

The other 5 were state schools - In addition to UDe, UM College Park and Penn State UP, I applied to Towson and their honors program and UM Baltimore County.

I used the common application wherever possible, and where not possible, many of the essay questions overlapped, as did the reference questions for my teachers. Unlike our guidance office, our teachers are very interested in supporting us whenever we need it - they're sticklers for earning the references - but they are generous when responding to requests for them. So the stuff the schools were seeing was similar.

Based on my honors and AP curriculum, extensive community service, 3 seasons of sports for 4 years, working as a ref and in a dentist office, leadership positions in several clubs over the span of HS, a 4 year art scholarship and B+/A-GPA and good SAT's vs the stated admit profiles of the schools, Towson and their honors program should have been a slam dunk. I received the acceptance from Towson within about 10 days of applying, along with a very generous scholarship a few weeks ago. Then last week, I received the rejection from the honors program. I haven't spent a lot of time thinking about it - but it is ironic that they gave me a ton of money - but aren't interested in me for honors. I have several close friends there and have attended everything from playing in their rec bball games, to football tailgates (we have season tix), to sitting in on their classes, to eating at the dining hall, and playing beer pong (I don't drink - I just bounce). Its really like a fifth yearof high school from what I can see and I'm afraid that outside of honors, I would be brain dead in a few weeks. Apparently they are looking for a profile or balance that I don't fit. So be it.

Next up was UMBC, which took me EA. This was a match school for me and was certainly a possibility since they have a great science program, but very close to home, so not too high on the list.

Then Penn State admitted me to University Park for fall in the early round of admissions. This was defintely a stretch school for me as an out of state applicant, not able to go to summer, and wanting only UP campus. I was delighted to be admitted. By then U De had deferred me and given my experience with the hit or miss nature of the Catholic school responses I had received - I had no confidence that UMCP and UDe were going to happen. I wanted a particular living learning program at PSU UP that was "first come - first served" so I actually accepted their offer and sent in my deposit, went back to visit again for a weekend and connect with friends who are there. Out of state tuition was a real financial stretch tho, and the place is remote for me - even though I loved the little town.

Then February rolled around and I was shocked when I was admitted to UMCP and invited to their Civicus living learning program. This was a dream come true all around. Not only have I always wanted to join my Dad in being a Terp - but I wanted the Civicus program very very much. I was amazed to get both the admission and the program invitation. I withdrew my PSU acceptance and sent in the $ to UMCP.

Happy camper - life was good - but no scholarship $ from UMCP of course - so I was waiting to see if UDe admitted me and gave me any $. That question was answered today. In but no $.

Soooooo...... all that said..... UM College Park admitted me and is the least expensive option between the 3 top schools on my list. Just lovely that its what I want the most and in retrospect very good that UDe didn't take me ED. I am happy to the extreme and would move into my dorm tonight and start classes tomorrow if they let me!

But I can't explain why I got into UMCP, PSU and UDe - but not Towson honors - nor why 2 Catholic schools wanted me badly enough to give me full rides - but a third waitlisted and a fourth deferred. Back to that X factor.

GGT

GGT, you are living proof that no one can predict who will be accepted/rejected on any given day. Best of luck to you at UMCP, things have a way of working out for the best. DD has been accepted to UMich, PSU Schreyer, Carnegie Mellon, UDel and has received a likely letter from Cornell Engineering. The best financial offers are from UDel and PSU. She got 1/2 tuition offer from Carnegie Mellon, but thinks that the atmosphere is too intense. She's not 100% certain of engineering, so the UDel offer of the duPont scholarship will allow her to explore and change majors if she desires. She knows and understands the financial realities, so unless she gets some whopping private scholarship money (won't know for another few weeks), Cornell is just not doable. UDel has impressed her (and us) and though the engineering program is not as strong as the other schools she has applied to, the opportunity to be a duPont scholar is hard to pass up. Pressure is building (still waiting to hear from Princeton), so these next few weeks will be hard for her - waiting, and then decision time. You've got to feel relieved that the stress of college applications and choices are over.

Oh - Yes - I do - and yes - thats why I put that history stuff in there. I'm very grateful for the ways things worked out for me - all to the best - and very aware that this doesn't happen for everyone.

In prior posts, I have referenced a very close friend who attends UDe. He is extremely bright and entered the school with so many AP credits (many for classes he never took - he just sat for the exams) that he was a Sophomore when he stepped on campus. He absolutely loves it. He is majoring in a combination of physics and philosophy. I have visited and although I haven't attended classes (I'm a life sciences gal - physics blows my mind) I have seen the social scene - the living accomodations - the sports stuff and the food. He's really stretching himself with his curriculum choices but he has a good balance of the school work, a part-time job and the social. Last year he lived in Rodney complex and I have to say it was one of the nicer dorm set ups I've seen for freshmen - including A/C. This year he lives in near-campus university owned housing and its awesome. There have been safety issues in Newark - just like any town (College Park is a living nightmare) but the UDe adminstration has been VERY proactive in making information public and working to enhance the safety of the campus environment. He's been offered an amazing internship at the school for this coming summer too!

When I expressed interest in the school, my Mom signed up for an internet newsletter that keeps parents aware of all kinds of things happening on campus - I think this is the link:
<a href="http://chico.nss.udel.edu/udaily/index.html?pageCat=parents%5B/url%5D">http://chico.nss.udel.edu/udaily/index.html?pageCat=parents</a></p>

Delaware was number one on her list although she was very supportive of my dream to go to Maryland. If Delaware had come through with some money to make it a less expensive alternative, we probably would have had to get family counselling to sort that one out ;>

Good luck to you and your dau - its stressful but so exciting!
