Application Supplement: Photo?

last year the new cadets (and cadre for that matter) experienced the first summer of the new Beast model. West Point shuffled up some events from first to second detail, and vice versa, changed the march out to a fly out and changed the “tent city” (or buckner bay for 2011) week to a week of patrol bases. It was an interesting experience due to the fact that prior to the week in the field the New Cadets had only spent a few nights in the field, and none in patrol bases. As such, a lot of field craft such as hygiene, sleeping arrangments and dealing with the rain had to be taught on the fly. They probably changed things up slightly this year but overall it will likely be very similar

ps bedroll keeps your body heat from going straight into the groundand keeps you warm…a poncho on the ground will keep you dry
pps yes, baby wipes are essential, used for everything from field hygiene to removing camo to cleaning equipment…you will be able to buy them but bringing some might not be a bad idea

time2 - what exactly is your problem?
The kid asked a question and was trying to be funny. He only really wanted to know about an interview which I took care of with a pm

Do you think it’s impossible to go to Harvard from UK or to go to Harvard from West Point?
These forums are all about young people being able to explore and ask questions without being made fun of.
Give it a rest.

mfs54200 - yes - make that cold and damp! Experience is a great teacher!
Baby wipes are an essential. She brought some to R-Day but they got locked away in the confusion. Fortunately, I was able to send a bunch to my NC just before they went out to the patrol bases.

You can’t be serious. He is asking about sending in his picture so he can impress admissions with his good looks!!! I doubt anyone takes that kind of question seriously.

Relax - you need not concern yourself with his inquiries. Obviously, he was attempting to be humorous as I explained. Now run along and go make fun of some candidates on the Navy or AF forum.
He and I communicated via PM. He is all set.

Unlike some, I DID see it as a ‘tongue in cheek’ type of question :)

As for Baby Wipes…great idea, but make sure you get UNSCENTED! Nothing is worse than attracting unwanted “critters” with the scent of flowers and perfume. Same goes for deodorant.

Andrewjx also posted his academic and extra-curricular resume in September. (See below.)

Andrew, it is too bad that you didn’t kick in sooner. Trying to gain admission into any of the Military Academies or Ivy League schools without more than this will be extremely problematic. If you are really serious about the military as a career; go to college, demonstrate that you can really excel and then reapply. Realize thought that at any of the military academies you would still start as a Plebe and have four years of college to complete.

<<<<<<
GPA: 2.94
ACT: 24 (Math 26, Reading 23, Science 24, English 24)
EC’s: Youth Group, Invisible Children (club)
Work: Part-Time O’Charleys (restaurant)
Basically I’m the guy who figured out how important GPA is too late.>>>

Things have changed since then, my act scores are a great deal higher (27 before studying; after studying extensively I’m expecting a 28-31 from my December ACT) and my ECs look weak there… not that I have to make a case for those of you here but:

Currently I am an intern with the startup company Yoonew (www.yoonew.com) based out of New York City, NY. I was offered a marketing and public relations position after a successful sports portfolio that grossed over four-thousand dollars this year. This success took an intense amount of analysis of sports markets including the NHL, NBA, NFL and their respective franchises. Other personal achievements include winning Class A state as a power forward in my junior year, continuing my knowledge of Spanish with the large ethnic community in my hometown, and gaining respect working 30 hours a week as a medical assistant at my community’s local pharmacy.

I’ve had a lot of family issues (requiring me to work 30+ hours weekly at O’Charleys and now the Pharmacy) that have helped lower my GPA. Not sure if the sympathy will help or hurt; it may show that I do have true potential that hasn’t been exerted based on situational circumstances.

Plus, now I’ve received my nomination.
I’d say I have a 1%-5% admittance chance.
Possibly 20% prep school chance; my regional admissions officer said he had 3 USMAPS slots available and 16 civil prep slots.

Either way, I’m giving it my all in my application process. If declined, I will most likely attend UK and reapply next year.

Again, one can’t much about a candidate by GPA. Not only does high school calculates GPA differently but it tells us nothing about which courses a candidate has taken, the level of difficulty or the grade in a specific course.

Andrew - good luck. Stay in touch with your regional. If you are interested in prep school please let him know. The only person who is qualified to make a judgement on your qualifications is your regional commander. No one who contributes to this forum is as qualifed for this task as he.
