I've applied to both Cornell and Brown and both have the option to add Supplemental Materials.
Will these be weighed heavily? I know you're not penalized without them but will it make a real difference?

Also, what could be considered a Supplemental Material? An essay, research paper? I have a 70 page Literature portfolio should I submit that? I have a biology lab abstract from a lab we did in class though, our class was divided into groups of 4, it was an AP Biology lab so it's not a rip off freshman lab I'm referring to.

70 pages!!!
Yes supplemental material can make a difference but not always…it should be something that is not already reflected in your application for any significant impact. And then again it has to be something very very very standout-ish…
your writing ability is already evident in your application, will the 70 page portfolio add something to it? i highly doubt anyone will go through 70 pages…it is really THAT good? if it is then cut it down to 2 to 3 pages at the most and then MAYBE someone will go through it but there are no guarantees. what u can do is maybe have some one i.e English teacher read it and then tell him/her to send a rec based on it…THAT will be much much more helpful.
