Volunteering:
coordinated a walk at a local park to raise money for Autism Speaks, raised approximately $500
Worked as a Counselor In Training at local Boys & Girls Club approx. 200 hours of service
I Paint homes in Guatemala whenever I visit family. Most recently (7/08) I went alone to spend time with my grandparents and I painted 3 homes of EXTREMELY underprivileged families. Also brought a suitcase completely separate of my belongings that had clothes and sneakers my younger brother and I had outgrown that I gave out to the village children.
When in Guatemala, I also teach english in local schools. My cousin is a teacher of 8 and 9 year olds, and when I make the trip I coordinate with her and her school to arrive 2x a week to help teach the children english (my cousin learned in Belize, but she likes my natural “American” accent and correct way of pronouncing words).

Other:
My mom was born and raised in Guatemala, and my father born and raised in Egypt. I am a first generation college student, first ever in my family actually.

Well, I’m no expert on the BC admissions process, but I have to say it’s a really good hook that you’re Hispanic/Latino AND a first generation college student. That’s going to help a ton. Your course load, ECs, and GPA look pretty solid. Your school doesn’t seem to be the most competitive, but doesn’t seem to be uncompetitive (2-3 ivies a year is above average I would say). The only part I see that could have improvement is your SAT. I’m not sure what the BC range is, but I assure you yours is on the lower end. But who knows, all the rest of your numbers could make up for it. If I had to guess, I would say that BC is a high match for you. (But then again, I’m also an applicant, so take my words for what you wish.)

thanks for the reply neo.

the first SAT i took, I scored a 550 on my CR and was able to see a 60pt increase, although of course I would’ve preferred more. I’m done with the sat’s now though, so just going to have to deal with what I have though

Solid hooks, decent GPA… I can’t see why they won’t accept you.

Is BC your top choice?

i agree with xx55xx!
you’re pretty well rounded AND you’re hispanic/latino AND first generation
so be expecting a fat congratulation letter in the mail on christmas (if you applied EA)

Dear aramada : With critical reading scores of 550 and 610, you are going to be very hard pressed by the reading intensive core courses which make up the university’s curriculum. This is not intended to deter you from pursuing your BC choice, but recognize that your performance in the critical reading area is in/at the bottom quartile of all accepted students.

From your AP curriculum, it would have been better to see one of the hard sciences (Chemistry, Biology, Physics) over Environmental Sciences and Calculus over Statistics. None the less, the AP courses are used for placement at Boston College as opposed to forming acceptance decisions.

Your extra-curriculars are strong, balanced, and intriguing. Your music background is interesting. Given your Long Island location, did you ever perform in NYSMMA or in one of the All County (Nassau/Suffolk) festivals?

Good luck with your application process.

@XX55XX and ymakrap i appreciate it guys but i’m already nervous enough as is lol the last thing I want is to expect anything. BC isn’t my top-choice, but as this whole college process continues the more I seem to be falling in love with the school and hopefully seeing myself in the future.

@scottj, i really appreciate your advice not only on this post but also on the thread i posted a couple of months ago that i posted at the end of my junior year. While the 610 certainly is still not amazing, compared to the 550 I had when I posted a chance thread a while back it can only help me. In terms of NYSSMA, our Select Chorale performed when I was a sophomore(I wasn’t apart of the group at the time) and received a Gold with Distinction Level VI, and we’re heading back this year. Are you a judge or something along those lines? Maybe come the spring time I could HOPEFULLY notify you of a good admission decision right after a great performance at NYSSMA? oh if only the world was perfect ^-^

aramada… I think you have an excellent shot at BC (60-70%!). The only flaw I see is your SAT, which still isn’t out of BC ballpark range. Your GPA is strong, transcript is excellent, EC’s are knock-out, and you have 2 solid hooks… as long as your recs/essays are good, I think you’re in good shape

Hope this helps!! Please chance me back!!

I understand such a feeling, actually, aramada. I didn’t do very much research about BC until after I was accepted. Never visited, never even really went on its website (I think I only logged onto Agora as an applicant only once) - only reason I applied was because it was a local school and it apparently had a reputable business school.

If they do accept you, I do recommend that you consider the offer. Sure, it is not the best school, but it is definitely a solid one, at least from my perspective.

Good luck!

I’d say you have a very good chance. I hope you get in, we’d love to have you here :)

@amr2014 the favor was returned
@soccersamdude11 I really hope it all ends up working out

and @XX55XX I hear where you’re coming from completely. Georgetown is and most likely will remain my number one, but Boston College is just way too lucrative to not pay any attention to and realistically speaking (seeing as how I applied to the SFS) BC may just end up being the place for me, if it all works out. The campus is great, location can’t be beat, and well I guess I’ll just have to wait it all out and see.

Thanks again guys!

You seem like a good candidate. And the minority thing does help, especially at a place like BC, because this school doesn’t have very many kids of other ethnicities.
