Application time is upon us! This is my final "chance me"...please!

Hello all!

I remember when I was looking at the Midd forum at this time last year, reading "chance me's" and comparing myself to the hopeful applicants. I posted a few of my own chance threads, getting reinforcing feedback and trying to take everything to heart. Well, I'm a senior now - WOW - and am filling out my EDI app. I suppose this will be my final "chance me", and I hope that you will take the time to respond and wish me luck! Thank you so much!

I would also really appreciate if anyone could help me clean up my awards and/or ECs - are any of them not worth mentioning? I put everything on here, no matter how small, and I know I should probably neaten it up come application time.

Midd's always been my dream school. I hope I have enough going for me. Your thoughts?

ALSO to note:

The average SAT I for my school is 1541.
Almost 70% of AP scores at my school are 1s or 2s.

I would say you are a strong applicant  good luck (I am considering applying ED1 too, but for some reason I’m hesitant :/).
My only advice would be to make sure you clean up your awards… some are unclear so just be sure to explain them all.
Also, It might be tough, but i would definitely try and shoot for a higher SAT math score…but im sure your already on that.
i commend you on your efforts and achievements in the face of adversity- good luck :)

Look good! Maybe consider taking the ACT or 3 SAT subject tests to submit instead of the SAT. Can’t hurt to try… Everything else looks terrific!

Oh Gracieboo, I’m worried about those SATS. Can you try the ACT this month? Your strong writing skills might serve you there.

I took the ACTs in April and had a terrible time, vowing to never take them again. I was surprised by a composite score of 29, but knew that I had a better chance at improving at SAT I. I took a class this summer and now have a tutor in SAT math to help me further, and have been practicing at least 2 hours per week since July. I hope my work will show in October.

Anything else besides scores?

No, everything else looks great, and I’m pulling for you.

They absolutely will take some typical Vermonters, and you have a shot, but your chances increase a lot w/SATs over 700. Absolutely apply ED, the legacy thing will help, and if you know someone who knows someone, ask for help.

OBD: What is a “typical” Vermonter??!

Local girl, public school, not poor/not rich,no big political or social connections, no parent with a high-powered job, community service minded, white, hasn’t had a lot of opportunity to be “groomed” for college, did all her stuff herself, not because her mother or some “college counselor” made her…

Kind of like my Midd kids…

Kind of like my CA kid as well… he is authentic as they come… I’m hoping it won’t hurt him too much to be a little rough around the edges. He is anything but polished.

i really like your app- i almost wouldnt change a thing.

I remember you! I still think you have a good shot because of the Vermonter and legacy status (+ED). I have 6 Midd people in my family and they definitely take those things into account. I know a double legacy Vermonter who is a freshman at Midd this year and had a 32 on the ACT, and didn’t have anywhere NEAR the EC’s you have. I am not sure what the SAT equivalent to a 32 is, but we are rooting for you! However, it is never good to get your heart set on one school…I wish I could get my many-times-over legacy D to appy ED, but it just isn’t going to happen! Good luck (and let us know!)!

Thanks everyone for your input! I will of course be all over CC in November/December, when I’m waiting to hear and when I actually do hear the decision :)

I know this is a Midd forum but…does anyone know anything about Colby College? And just if I didn’t get into Midd and was going to apply regular to Colby, if anyone has a sense of how they would view my app there, and if I had a shot RD.

More input is welcome, too - thanks

Lovely place, that Colby! People say there’s a similar vibe there to Midd–certainly lots of kids are interested in both. Colby’s academically great --exceptionally friendly student body, very committed to their goals yet also great all-around kids. Definitely not a cutthroat atmosphere, but rather collaborative. Outdoor activities are big, just like at Midd. Take a look at the Colby threads–you’ll see lots of good info. I’m just a parent, but we’ve been very impressed!

And Bates, too of course-SAT optional, and that is your weak point…

I really think I’m going to send my scores everywhere I apply…my reading is well within the averages, my writing is well above, and my math only has to come up 20 points by October 1st after a summer of prep. Are they really that weak? I mean, ACT is definitely not for me…

@Calmama - that makes me feel hopeful. But I am preparing myself for a rejection, too, you can be sure of that. I know it will be hard at first if things don’t work out, but I’d apply EDII to Colby where I am sure I’d be really happy, if I got in!

Our daughter with similar SAT scores (slightly higher Math and higher Reading but somewhat lower Writing score) was wait-listed at Midd and is now very, very happily attending Colby. Her EC’s and GPA were similar to yours. ED certainly seems to be a promising approach these days! Best to you Gracieboo.

Great news! October scores are in…and I improved my math by 70 points, 630 to 700! Studied very hard for that. Reading went up by 10 points, and writing went down into the 700s but it doesn’t matter because I have that 800 locked in. Superscore is now 2190, ten points short of my goal, but 80 points better than before, so I’m happy :)

Gracie, I’m thrilled for you, dear! Really improves those chances! Nice job staying focused on those goals!
Now you’re good for anywhere!
