Application Timing + Michigan GPA

Unfortunately, I didn't have much knowledge about rolling admissions before I came to this site so I was lazily thinking I could wait till February 1rst. However, now im trying to get my application out by mid movember. Also, I understand that michigan recalculates GPA so if I have all A's and A-'s, (UW 3.96) will this become a 4.0? Also, if I have this 4.0, a class rank of top 1%, SAT 2150 SAT II 800 790, how bad will my essays/recs have to be to not get in. Also, does my submitting mid-november seriously detract from my chances of admittance? Also, I'm out of state (from New Hampshire). I've been thinking i have about a 70% chance of getting in (match safety), how far off am I in this prediction?

First of all -- go ahead and get your teacher/counselor recs in right now. Otherwise you'll end up waiting for two weeks while they sort thru the paper.

Second, yes - I think your GPA will translate to a 4.0. But really a 3.96 is good enough. I say, unless there is something very bad in your recs/essays -- you should be admitted with your stats.

anything bad in a rec will absolutely kill you but there's nothing to worry about on that front because teachers/counselors understand that.

On the other hand, your essay better be really good. It's not that you don't have a good chance of getting in; you have a great chance. But I'm thinking that your stats are good enough that they might think you're using U of M as a safety school and colleges are always touchy about that sort of thing.

So make sure your dedication comes out in your essay and you'll be fine!

heh, I know a kid whose rec sent a letter after he was accepted telling UMich to rescind his admission; he is a Junior at UMich ....

"heh, I know a kid whose rec sent a letter after he was accepted telling UMich to rescind his admission; he is a Junior at UMich ...."

Ouch...that's gotta be an evil teacher to try and sabotage a kid like that.

Well, the kid started to blow school off after he was accepted. He even came to the rec's class after lunch a bit drunk.

Her initial letter was probably very good (they were pretty close), but obviously the latter one ... heh.

Why woould your essays/recs be bad? You are ranked in the top 1%, have a 4.0 GPA and a 2150 on your SAT. Make a small effort for your essays and I am sure they will be fine. Michigan does not expect Earth shattering essays. And given your track record, I would be shocked in your recs weren't stellar.

Given all that, I would say your chances of getting are more like 90%, not 70%.
