Application without SAT?

One of my friend is thinking of applying from China and would like to enroll in the winter semester of first year university. Since this is a very recent decision, there has not been any preparation for SAT and whatnot. Is it possible for him to apply without SAT? What would be essential in this type of application if he aims to commence study only as a language student (i.e. not very impressive English).

Thanks in advance

depends on the school.

but i heard foreign students take toefl or something.

I don't have much (read: any) experience with foreign applications but I'm guessing that a letter of explanation as to why he doesn't have any SAT scores could explain away that problem. That said, I'm sure schools want to see some form of testing besides just grades from a school they know nothing about.

For a current list of universities that are SAT/ACT test optional visit:

International students who come from non-English speaking countries are generally required to meet certain TOEFL scores before admission to the regular program.

Many universities have intensive English language programs. Admission is not particularly selective to those programs, and sometimes the TOEFL isn't even required because the university uses its own placement exam. Admission to an intensive English program DOES NOT guarantee admission to that particular university, or to any other university.

Usually international students are advised to begin their college search a FULL YEAR before they want to start classes in the US. Your friend should visit the international forum here at cc and read all of the sticky threads at the top before he takes this process any further.

leprechan -- you mention that your friend doesn't have very impressive English. My guess is that he/she wouldn't score very well on the SAT verbal part, nor very well on the TOEFL -- so they probably aren't looking to apply to Yale/Middlebury. etc.

If money if not an issue, there are many programs still open and I am sure that plenty of them will not require the SAT.

I would check out Santa Monica College in California -- large international population, great transfer opportunities to UCLA, and top schools. They are still accepting applications (last I heard). He/she can even view the website in Chinese -- which might help when talking with family.
