How long does it take to get a offical application after preapplication? do get notified if you didnt qualify through the preapp?
thanks

if your preapplication indicates you fall within the minimum standards for USNA, then you will receive an official candidate packet from the academy. As you probably know already, you can complete the peliminary application on-line starting in Feb of your junior year....the official candidate packets start going out mid summer, starting about mid-july, and continue from there.

If, for some reason, the USNA determines you have not met the minimum standards for admission, you will get a letter to that effect. In addition, you may get a call from your BGO as to what else is needed to make you a viable candidate.

If you do not hear anything at all by 9/1, I would suggest calling your BGO and starting from there.

Best of luck!

My son filled out his preliminary application online in early May. He was notified by U.S. mail (about 30 days later?) that he was an official candidate and the letter contained his candidate number. Using the candidate number he could log on to the usna.edu website and begin completing his full application online.

He is not going to get nor does he expect to get a 'packet' in the U.S. mail as everything can be completed and checked online. I don't know if you can still complete a paper application. I seem to remember that there was an option to ask for a paper version of the preliminary application but I don't know if the same is true for the full application.

How long has it been since you completed your preliminary application online? If it's been over 30 days I think you should have gotten something in the mail by now and might consider calling admissions.

Q: Do you get notified if you are not qualified?
A: Yes, but you will also be notified if you are and given a candidate number

Q: What if I am told I am not qualified am I screwed as far as USNA is concerned?
A: Discuss your case with your BGO or with admissions.

ok thanks, yea i just filled the pre app last sunday? i didnt know how long it would take to get a reply. But I will wait the 30 days before bugging USNA's admissions dept.

The notification that you have been selected as an "official candidate" comes by mail- along with instructions as to how to complete the rest of the paperwork on-line.

that sounds about right, but before contacting the admissions dept, suggest contacting your BGO first; they are your first-line resource.
