Applications by the Dozen, as Anxious Seniors Hedge College Bets

The escalation in the number of schools on students’ lists is driven by several factors, but perhaps the strongest is plain old fear.

We experienced some creep last year as D went from 10 to 15 after her ED1 deferral, but if you’re applying to 20 or 30 schools and you’re not applying to highly competitive music/dance/theater programs that only take a handful of kids, you really need to take a step back and ask yourself how many of these schools do you have a realistic chance at? I think too many kids think they’re playing the lottery with reach schools when admissions is not a lottery at all.
