According to this article in today’s Washington Post, applications are up 6% at Washington and Lee University, (not 3%) and UVA has received the largest number of applicants in it’s history, 22,396.

It also looks like UMBC has a 5% increase, but UMD College Park may have a decrease (numbers not given)

Per Washington Post January 24th:

But applications to Johns Hopkins University are up 13 percent over last year, with a projected pool of 18,150 students competing for 1,235 seats in the freshman class. The University of Richmond received 8,500 applications for 805 slots, a 9 percent increase. Applications are up 6 percent at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Va., and 3 percent at George Washington University in the District. The University of Virginia fielded 22,396 applications, an all-time high. The College of William and Mary, too, expects a record number of applicants.

Thanks to all for their edits.

Take that with a big grain of salt. Lots of marketing tricks

[Colleges Market Easy, No-Fee Sell to Applicants - NYTimes.com](http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/26/education/26admit.html?pagewanted=1&hp)

Don’t these numbers have to reflect the number of applications per student? There are slightly fewer students graduating this year than last, so where else could such overall numbers jumps come from? Chicago has been ‘discovered’ it seems…but in general I’m guessing that after these last 5 years of difficult admissions, students have responded by applying more widely, generating more applications… which may mean more kids coming in off waitlists in the spring.

;Does anyone have the figures for the schools in DC–American, GW, Georgetown, Howard?

That’s what I’m wondering also. At my son’s school, this year’s class is much smaller than last year but if you look at Naviance, they have applied in much larger numbers to a greater number of schools. I’m not entirely sure why. I haven’t heard the GCs encouraging this. I know my son has received a mountain of letters (I’m talking several large boxes full), marketing brochures and emails but I figured that was because he was a NMSF. I wonder if all students have been receiving this much marketing material.

Something seems off about this. I can see state U’s getting a huge uptick in applications and even Chicago but we’re in the middle of a major recession. Most GCs were predicting a downward trend in applications for the more pricier schools and an upward trend in the state Us. How is the average wage earner planning to pay for schools for a $50k a year school? Surely, they’re not taking on more loans. Maybe they’re casting a wide net in hopes of more merit aid.

Yes, I think international apps are a big part of it-- nice fat full-pay international apps that boost “diversity” without draining the coffers.

I’d say keep them rich foreign students coming! We need the infusion of cash! Colleges can expand total enrollment to accommodate more internationals by not guaranteeing on campus housing for them.
