Applications Growth - Class of 2014

The USC Chronicle reported freshmen applications were up slightly from last year’s number of 35,753. The targeted freshmen class number is 2600. Applications from the northeastern states increased significantly. Applicant pool SAT scores were up by 20 points. USC does not have ED, EA or use the common application.

Although a large number of students enroll in the Marshall School of Business and the Viterbi School of Engineering 18% of the student body are in the arts.

I have seen some posts here (including mine) noting that applications from foreigners are up this year. Some have posted that this is great since they pay full freight. (Actually, I don’t think that is completely true since some collges give even foreigners some financial aid). Maybe it’s good to have foreigners in our schools to get their money and so that our kids have a diverse college, but back when I was in college (I am MIT '78), there was a group of foreign students (about 30 I think) who I am SURE were paying full freight. They were all students in one particular major. There were some protests on campus about them, but ultimately, with time, the fuss died down and I suppose they all graduated and are back at home abroad and have been practicing for 30 years what they learned here in the U.S. at MIT. Punchline: they were all from Iran and they were all majoring in nuclear engineering. TRUE STORY.

Adding Fordham University: 27,377 total applications as of Feb 1, 2010,
representing a 14%increase over last year, and the 19th consecutive year of applicant increases, and a 17% increase in EA applications (Fordham does not have ED), and 26% increase in International applications.

I wonder if any of them survived the revolution’s purge of the Shah’s intellectuals.

As an alumni of Muhlenberg College I received an email today regarding the health of their endowment fund and an update that regular decision applications are up 4% but early decision apps are down about 10% due to financial aid offers being part of the decison process.

do you think these numbers will be sustained for next year?
