Hey, I was just wondering if this ever happens, someone applies for a PhD program but instead is offered a Masters position instead...I remember reading about it but I'm not sure if I made it up or not. More specifically, does this ever happen for Engineering schools? Thanks for the help!

When you apply, they some times have an option where you can be considered for a MS if you were denied for a PhD. Other times, they won’t have an option and just do that anyways. Stanford’s CS program is one of those with that option.

What if you’re qualified for MS, but not for PhD?
You apply for PhD, and they reject you for that and don’t consider you for MS either?
Can that happen?

It would be really risky…

Is it standard procedure for this department?

I know at least one department who admits all PhD applicants (w/o a Master’s degree) into the Master’s program first. If students finish the Master’s in good standing, admittance into the PhD program is just a formality. Master’s and PhD candidates there are treated the same with respect to financial support.
