My son is interested in the applied Mathematics program at NU or Tufts. He is thinking of applying ED at one or the other
He has a 3.86 weighted gpa
34 on ACT
Advice on both programs would be much appreciated!

Applied math is one of those things where you could go in many directions as far as work after college. I think NEU would give him a chance to see what types of math jobs he is interested in based upon his co-op experiences.
My daughter was a combined econ/math major and is working as an analyst. Her experience with the math department was very good. She didn’t have any bad math teachers and several were amazing. The math department is well run. She had to take the post co-op class with the pure math majors and they had a broad range of co-op jobs. (although I don’t remember what they were).
If he is interested in applied math, he should check out various joint majors also. That might help him to decide which direction to “apply” his math in.
When she graduated, we attended the math department celebration for its majors. It was a small function, the number of math majors is small!
Good information above. Generally if you are debating ED between schools, it’s probably better to not do ED and leave your options open for merit/FA money + changing opinions of schools. The ED boost is not significant enough at either of those mentioned as to be required.
The programs will be pretty similar overall, but the schools are very different when it comes to fit. While both close to Boston, Tufts is very much a traditional campus and much of the social life will focus on the campus while Northeastern is much more of a city school. Tufts leans liberal arts while Northeastern is obviously very much about practically with co-op. Frankly, if you must ED, I would focus on those factors rather than the specifics of these two programs in this case.
Good luck!
