Those are extremely selective schools. What his GPA and SAT score ? If he gets accepted to any of them, then awesome but you need some more:-

University of Wisconsin-Madison

University of Texas at Austin

University of Illinois- Urbana Champaign

Georgia Tech

Penn State

University of Minnesota- Twin Cities

He has a 3.9 GPA and a 740 on the math section of the SAT. We are just beginning the process of looking at schools. He will take the SAT again next year. University of Wisconsin, Penn State and Georgia Tech sound like great possibilities. Thanks for the feedback.

What areas of application? Consider also the strength of offerings in the areas of application that are of interest (e.g. statistics, computer science, economics, physics, operations research, etc.).

Cost constraints, financial aid situation, and state of residency? Check the net price calculators on each school to determine if they are realistic on need-based aid – if not, then the student is aiming for a large enough merit scholarship, not merely admission.
