Applied Math

If I major in Applied Math at Carnegie Mellon, will the job opportunities after college be comparable to those if I majored in Economics (Tepper school, which is highly ranked)?

You mean math in MCS? I've browsed through the course catalog and I don't remember an "Applied Math" major. If my initial presumption of MCS Math was correct then the answer is "Yes" the job opps will probably be comparable depending on the courses you take besides your core (some econ courses would be nice for business-type jobs). Also do you want to do consulting, trading, ibanking, accounting, etc?? It's actually pretty hard to compare MCS to other schools as their placement reports concentrate a lot on grad school/Med School and higher education while Tepper/Econ kids tend to get a job postgrad.

If you are talking about some other kind of major please explain and point out the major in the online course catalog (page number). If you list your dream job(s) it would also help in selecting a major.

I guess math in the Mellon school.

On CollegeBoard.com they list Carnegie Mellon as having the major "Applied Math", but I guess at CMU the major is not actually called that.

Since you're interested in economics and applied math, you might also want to look at the computational finance major. I think it's under interdepartmental majors and requires computational finance, economics, and computer science courses.

That sounds like a good fit. Thanks =)

One question though: Would I declare this major the same way other majors are declared in MCS (midway through second semester of first year), even though it's interdisciplinary? On the CMU supplement, after the part where you choose your school, they have a section for interdisciplinary majors, but computational finance isn't listed there.

def do computational finance. The program is ranked second only to MIT and is very well respected at places like wall st. I plan on doing that if I dont trasfer out of CMU.

the program is very competitive. you apply after your sophomore year. There is a limit of 10 kids per year. I hears the class of 2007 only had three computational finance majors- its very selective. You apply from either tepper, an econ major, or a mathematical science major.

limit of 10 kids per year? well damn

Well you can also minor in it which I think requires a 3.0 GPA min.
