Applied mathematics vs finance?

At first i wanted to major in finance, but my dad suggested applied mathematics because it's a broader major and gives me more career options once i graduate. However, i do want to head down the business path. Is it better to just take finance or take applied mathematics and minor in finance or econ.

Also what are some good schools for both these majors. Not ivy leagues, just some good, above-mediocre schools

Thank you!

Location? School size? Budget/FA needs?

I agree with your dad. Plus, if you major in applied math, you will have more schools open to you. Liberal arts colleges have math as a major and often have applied math whereas to get a finance degree you have to go somewhere that has an undergraduate business school. In addition, the rigorous math classes will make you a more attractive candidate than someone with a business degree. The business degree is more breadth than depth. Of course, it depends on the school. Decide which schools you are interested in and then go to the “academics” section of the web site and compare the actual courses you will take.
