Which schools have solid applied mathematics programs, besides the Ivies and near Ivies? For instance, does Rensselaer have a good applied mathematics program? I'm applying to the University of Chicago and MIT, along with others, but I would love to have more back-up schools.

NYU, admissions are easy but the school is pricey

Most good engineering schools have good applied math programs. RPI, WPI (not well known, but my son was impressed with the level of classes and students when he visited), etc.

Would RPI or NYU provide decent financial aid?

Hard to say these days. I know that RPI has merit aid as well as need-based. That said, many state unis have solid applied math departments. Some of the best stats/biostats departments in the country are at state schools such as Purdue, UNC and U Michigan. Depending on the state you live in, you may well be able to get a good applied math education paying in-state tuition.

The closest school that I am looking at for applied mathematics is Georgia Tech, but I live in Tennessee. So I won't get in-state tuition there. Most of the schools I have looked into in Tennessee don't have the type of program that I am looking for.
