Applied To Any Creative Writing Progams?

Anyone else apply to creative writing camps for the summer?
I’ve applied to Juniper Institute for Young Writers, Reynolds Young Writers Workshop, and the Kenyon Review.
I’m curious as to whether anybody has applied to the same programs as I have.
Also, if you’ve attended any of the above programs, I’d love to hear about your experiences. :slight_smile:

I have never applied to Reynolds Young Writers Workshop or the Kenyon Review, but I did attend the Juniper Institute for Young Writers last summer. It was one of the best experiences of my life and I HIGHLY recommend it. I loved the fact that I got to dorm at the University of Massachusetts Amherst campus, (which is beautiful) providing me with an opportunity to experience what college life will soon be like. The counselors also take the writers to the town of Amherst, which is a quaint writer’s town with book stores, restaurants, places to shop, etc. You can also go on field trips (I went to an independent publishing house, The Flying Object) They have amazing, dedicated, faculty, and you are surrounded by talented writers that really inspire you. My writing improved SO much when I went there. It really opened my eyes on different ways to write and the workshops are really helpful. There are also readings by published writers every night, and there are a lot of activities. (such as open mic night, which is really fun) I loved Juniper, and wish I could go again, but unfortunately this year it conflicts with the date of my graduation. I recommend anyone to go.

@anxiousstudent9 Thank you- your review definitely helps me a lot! Do you feel like it was really difficult to get into the program? And how long did it take them to get back to you on their decision? I’m anxiously awaiting the news…

The program is pretty selective, on the first day at orientation the counselors all told us that hundreds of kids apply every year and every year hundreds get rejected, and that we should feel special for getting in. Last summer I only applied to two creative writing summer programs–Juniper and a creative writing workshop for high school students at Alfred University. I got rejected from Alfred, but got accepted into Juniper. (when I thought it would be the other way around) I didn’t receive my acceptance email from them until early June (June 1 or 2) so I think that the latest you’ll hear back is probably sometime in June.

@anxiousstudent9 Wow, June! I’m not sure if I can wait that long, haha. :)) I’m considering applying to Alfred, too, but I haven’t decided yet. Thank you, though, at least I have a little more of an idea of what to expect now! (:

@anxiousstudent9 I actually just got an email saying that I’ve been accepted into Juniper! I’m not sure whether or not I’m going to attend, yet, but this is really awesome! I’m also glad that I don’t have to wait until June to find out, haha…

@turnthepages Congratulations on getting in! That’s so great to hear :slight_smile: I hope you have fun at whichever writing program you choose to attend, good luck!

@anxiousstudent9 Thank you!! (:
