Applied to Penn for the heck of it

it's amazing how i know what ur all talking about with the shows and the singers... i like to think i'm immersed in my culture... haha

but about cornell 38% acceptance, but they rank higher than all the other ivies in engineering...? weird

Hey Manchu, haha, I listen to those ppl, and a lot of others (i don't like Twins too much, Edison Chen is forcing it with his...uhh...rap skillz). I download whole cds at a time, and am very happily in love w. my ipod.

My favs (it's all over the place): David Tao, Boyz (just the newest album...they've matured), Leehom, Endy, Chris Yu, Li Sheng Jie (LOVE THE MUSIC), Jade, Joey, Jay, Leslie (sigh...can't believe he killed himself), Andy, Leon, Jackie, VRF, Zhang Xin Zhe, Lu Yi, Jordan Chan, Lin Yi Lian, Yu Quan, JJ (love him)...the list goes on and on and on...

I pay a membership fee to a website, and download one CD at a time. But you can totally just go to like a whole bunch of cool BBS's and they have like whole CDs for download (192 bit)...very convienent.

We totally have to get together guys if we somehow all end up at Penn. :) I'm ED Huntsman, still suffering from a strong sense of disbelief that they took me...WOW.

Hao^2: Did you apply ED or RD? Wharton's chill, don't sweat. But it is very hardcore when it comes to Math.

Manchu: RD to where? College or Wharton or SEAS or joint-degree or some department I have no clue about? <<<< So, I guess I'm writing the forth lit analysis, and that above ^^ is what we call a polysyndeton ("or" instead of "and"...does it still count? I don't care anymore...)...ok. Back to my essay....

The only Leon one I have is the Red Shoe or something like that. His song Fly in the Marmelade is so hilarious. I have this ghetto film of his, God of Gamblers 3 and he looked so cleancut I didn't even recognize him.

I totally agree...I want to meet you guys now. Really badly. I applied RD...not that I hate math, it's just that I'm one of those people where I have to do five million sample problems before I learn it well and then I forget it right after the test. My calculus 3/4 teacher once told me that it's too bad I'm not naturally good at math because he liked diligent students but loved those who just "got it" the first time...what a backhanded compliment/insult. :)

It's awesome that you got into the Huntsman program. I always get excited when people get the news they want to hear...I cried so hard when my friend got into Stanford. Huntsman's what I really wanted to do at Penn but since I didn't apply ED I figured my chances would be nil. So far, I've experienced only rejections and deferrals so hopefully April will bring better news.

Hao^2, where did you apply during the Early rounds, if you do not mind me asking.

Huntsman is friggin' awesome, even though the dorms seem lame, but the program itself is awesome. Calculus 3/4?? What class is this? I love math...let's hope I can squeeze a minor in it at Penn...

HAHA. If we seriously all bump into each other at Penn, we'll swap CDs and everything. I have about few hundred CDs and about 30GBs of MP3...lol...fun fun fun downloading...ok. Procrastination IS SIN. Back to paper...although I can't even read what I am writing...oh well...

No, I don't mind at all. I'm not one of those secretive Asians. I applied to Yale, was royally deferred. Then I applied for an in state scholarship, was rejected because they didn't think the likelihood of my going was strong enough.

I think you would love Calc 3/4...maybe you've already taken it but under a different name? it's 3dimensional calculus bc stuff and also the first semester of differential equations. the only thing i absolutely hated was frobenius...the man should've been staked through his evil math heart. we only had 11 people in our class and our teacher was first class. so lots of personal attention and waffle parties. during each test, people would bring in donuts to eat and afterwards, we'd bring in wafflemakers and have breakfast and reddiwhip "accidents". still, he graded solely based on tests so the pressure was intense.

I'm writing an English paper right now also...I could've been done 2 hours ago. lol

HAHA. I'm in Calc BC right now...3 ppl in the class, stuck w. the AB kids, but the teacher's AWESOME (in caps...seriously, she's AWESOME)...lets hope I get a 5 on the AP. My math class's 90% test grade and everything else is just...useless. You've prolly taken it already.

I hate the Tufts Syndrome...but I guess it's justified. Where else have you applied? I wish you the BEST of luck for Penn Huntsman! then we can bump into each other on Huntsman Day!

I give up on my close reading/analysis essay...moving on, IB Extended Essay...Muwahhaha...I laugh and pity myself.

yeah, i took it sophomore year because our school combines ab and bc into just one class . now senior year, i've actually regressed to statistics, which is so easy that i actually feel my brain shrinking. have you taken it? because i cannot believe that there are people who stud and get less than a 3 on that test.

As far as other schools, i did all the ivies except for brown and dartmouth, and stanford and georgetown. my safety is just my in state because even w/o the scholarship i still get a really sweet deal. plus, graduating in two years sounds awesome. i was going to ask you the really stupid question of where are you applying until i realized that penn is ED! yeah, it's definitely past my bedtime...as evinced by my unwillingness to capitalize :) huntsman day sounds so awesome, just a small tightknit group...::drool::

my advice: forget abou the ib essay, you already got accepted into college and you're doing ap so what's the point? go watch a soap opera with takeshi kaneshiro in it.

HOly cow, you are way ahead of me in math...hehe. Haven't taken stats, I was going to self study it this year, apparently, I am lacking in motivation right now, so, that idea is gone, gone, gone...down the tube. I am just gonna try my best to study Chem AP (my teacher sucks...I mean...really SUCKS) and memorize the AP textbook and study guides, lets hope that 5 is within reach, I am seriously not a science person (maybe physics, but Bio and Chem...ergh). Yea, IB is kinda useless now, since Huntsman doesn't count any of the credits (7 in HL History=zilch...O.o). Tryin' hard to focus on APs...I've cut my partying down to almost zero...shrug

What language are you applying to for Huntsman? o! And by let's see...ummm...middle of March, if you get a tape test thingy from Huntsman, I think you're in. That piece of info just popped up at me...it's late, and I'm totally rambling. This is what you get after the eigth cup of coffee, 2,000 words of political analysis....IB, I resent you.

Time for bed. Nice forum chatting today. See you guys tomorrow...or today, depending on when you read this post...not making any sense at all...I know. HAHA>

Argh! What is it with AP Chem teachers? Mine was the worst EVER! He didn't teach us anything that prepared us for the AP exam so I had to self study but I didn't have enough motivation and ended up with a 3. ::hangs head in shame:: I have dishonored my family tree. Though it's funny how we're totally opposite. I actually love Chem and Bio and DESPISE Physics. I dropped AP Physics this year because the teacher was just impossible to understand.

I applied with Spanish but I definitely won't be getting a tape test. I had originally put Wharton and changed it literally 2 days before the entire app was due. So...yeah...not a good essay. I totally regret my actions now but I was still hung up over Yale. It's strange, the deferral didn't bother me at all for the first couple of weeks but as I started doing apps again, it just killed my confidence. I don't want to be used as an example to make others feel better. You know, "grades aren't everything...just last year, our school's valedictorian who had a 1600 got rejected from every single school while the guy who wasn't even in the top 5% got accepted into Penn"...shudder...

It's officially the 13th...in two more days, I will be an ADULT! Not looking forward to it...I think I'm in total denial. It's alll downhill from now. :)

I'd better go to bed now also...it's 12:30 over here in Arizona. Where are you from? (I'm sure you've posted this somewhere but I'm too lazy to look it up) It was fabulous chatting with you and those other wimps who went to bed early. :p

OMG...you're in AZ?!?!?!??!?!?!?!??!?!?!??! I'm in AZ.....jaw drops....!!!! Where? I'm in Phoenix, Arizona....!!!!OMG!

In my chem class, supposedly, the teacher expects the kids to just "learn the very basics" and expand...and know how to do the hardest problems (as in, things the teacher has NEVER taught us before...). The teaching style is so BLAH, not objective whatsoever..."learn by osmosis"...ARGH!!!

Catch 22 - I applied to SEAS since they have a pretty good bioeng program.

Chinese rap is not a good inmitation of American ones so I don't really compare them to each other lol. I think most Chinese rap songs are just funny. Most of the good singers/artists are from either HK or Taiwan. It's kinda sad that only few are from the big mainland CHina lol. What website do you have membership from? Is it free? I download my from various Chinese sites but they don't have that many good downloadable songs.

Hao^2 I took calc sophomore year too but I didn't take the BC AP test until junior year. Are you taking classes at a college now? I'm taking Diff Equations.

Hehe you guys are taking Chem AP too? It's ALOT ALOT of work, easy work that takes hours. I like bio and physics AP better though.

sry just skimmed!

i had to comment that i think meteor garden is ridiculous.. as well as all other soaps cuz the plot's so unrealistic (i have a problem w/ suspension of disbelief for things that are ..trying to be real? X)).. SORRY. well i've never really watched the historical-like ones, but gahhh my mom used to watch krn ones until late into the night and my friend went through meteor garden season II in like.. two days... they fastforwarded thru some parts (??)
lol, also yeah i'm not a fan of F4.

last week i had a craving for chinese music but i don't have much =(

what else.. math.. i suck at math so much. hao i'm actually one of those ppl that need to do a billion practice problems before getting it... you're already above most of us in terms of math.. i should've taken calc III this year but math's my worst AND i really wanted to take ap french.... so i didn'tt ake calc III/diff eq, and stat wouldn't fit into my schedule. i should've taken calc bc over again.. =P

i'm in ap bio... i love bio... but my physics teacher and my chem teacher were both really really bad at teaching. sigh i could've used those two years of science for something else....

hehe those Chinese dramas are so addicting. I remember watching it once from 9 PM until 7 AM before going to sleep. That was in the summer of course lol.

What types of Chinese music do you guys like? I like the pop, techno/dance, R&B, and rap ones.

I like any kind of good music (English or Chinese): pop, R&B, Hiphop, rap, alternative, soul, jazz...

current fave songs: muse - hysteria and jet - look what you've done. i basically like anything on y100 (for those who live around philly).

songs i'll always like no matter how old they are:
elvis presley -fools rush in
blink 182 - basically the whole blink 182 (newest) CD
the ataris - boys of summer
john mayer is always good

i also have this crazy obsession with classical music. what can i say? i'm pretty weird but that's ok.

Catch 22- I saw your message during lunch at school and I started shrieking I got so excited. All my friends were like, "what's wrong?" and all I could say was "she lives in Phoenix!!!!". Wow, what are the odds??? I live in Phoenix but go to school in Tempe at Corona del Sol. What about you? OMG! I'm still in shock and it's been hours. Now all of my friends think I'm absolutely certifiable.

I love ALL music except for heavy metal though my favorite is traditional chinese instrumentation with the pipa, zither, er hu or bamboo flute...it's all so haunting.

OMG! I got up at 5 today morning (HW) and then I checked the post thingy, and I was like...holy cow!!!! LOL. I live and go to school in Phoenix: Barry Goldwater HS. That's CRAZY! LOL. If I remember correctly, there's somebody else who goes to your school from this board, forgot who. HAHA.

Yea. Have you ever heard of the "twelve girls band"? Great music. I like everything besides heavy metal (whats the point if I can't even understand them? I like singers, not screamers...no offense to anyone who likes this kind of music) and country...

Ain't it so cool that we are like both in AZ? Woot!

Why do you go to school in Tempe and live in Phoenix? (prolly a dumb question...hehe...but I'm curious).

Oh yea guys. I have a great BBS thingy that like offers the latest Chinese CDs for download...cn808.net (add the www). Sign up to be a forum member (free) and just randomly post a message to get one point (chat-point) and go to the "MP3" section of the thing, they often times have the newest Chinese CDs for download, one at a time...:) It's most convinent to use when it's afternoon/noon here in the US because the servers slow down a lot during the day...

Yeah, the other person from my school is silmon77...he actually introduced me to this site. It's so funny when I read his posts because it sounds just like him. I go to school in Tempe because I used to live in Chandler and moved last year. The district's policy is that I can finish up my senior year at the same school. I've actually never heard of Barry Goldwater HS, is it in the Deer Valley SD? I've heard of the district...and how it's a rich district. Is that true? The school I should have gone to was South Mountain HS and when I visited I was SO freaked out. They had a nice campus inside but right by the parking lot was a junkyard and the entire school looked like a prison from the outside. It's probably because I'm from the snooty East Valley...some of the kids at my school are so loaded it's crazy. All day it's Prada this and BMW that.

No, I haven't heard of the band. I kind of stopped listening to music last year because it was too distracting to keep up with everything and now that I'm back into it again, I realize how much it has changed. This fob at my school was sharing his CD's with me and I didn't recognize a single artists' name. He thought it was funny how I still had tapes from the 1980's. I love Chinese oldies, they're so amusing. However, I just discovered this anime show Noir and it has the most incredible music to accompany it. And just what is it with Arizona and country music haters? I'm like the only one I know around here that actually likes country music...I feel so alone :(

The fact that we're both from Phoenix only reaffirms the fact that if we are going to Penn, WE MUST MEET. I think that Penn is the place where a majority of my childhood Chinese friends are applying to. It's sad how when I was writing the Why Penn essay I couldn't think of a lot of things to write but ever since then, I have discovered so many wonderful aspects of the school.

If you like classical music, you HAVE TO check out the "twelve girls band"...seriously, it's like...very very good (this is where language becomes a restrictive barrier of expression instead of a truly communicative tool...we talked about semantics today in class...lol...). Yea, Goldwater's one of the deer valley schools...it's ok, middle class america, nothing fancy. Our academics can kill the other HS in the district, but everything else is mediocre. Mountain Ridge HS is the rich HS...I swear...it's like BMWs and Mercedes all over the place...there's a mutual hatred between the two HS's...

Have you met the AZ rep for Penn? He's freakin' cool...lol...

hey I know 12 girls band! They are the group with the "er hu" and classical Chinese instruments right? Catch-22 thanks for the site. Does it do anything to your computer though, like Kazaa does? btw, are you male or female (just wondering, I never knew lol)

Hao^2 - I don't think my "why penn" essay was very good either, like I'm not sure how well I convinced my point and stuff. I hope my other essay can make up for it.
