Applied to UC colleges but did not meet A-G requirements

Hello CC,

I've just applied to three UC colleges - Berkeley, LA, and San Diego. I'm an International student so my chances for admissions are that much lower.

However, after sending the application I found out that I did not meet the A-G requirements because I took only one science through out high school. I took Physics for 4 years, but no other science. The general requirement is that I take at least two lab sciences, and hence I didn't meet this. It's too late for me to take SAT subject tests in biology/chem so that is no option for me.

I did mention this in the 'additional comments' section of my application hoping that it would be considered. I said the truth: in my high school, integrated science is not offered and students must choose from any of the 3 fundamental sciences - bio, chem and physics. Also, my school advises students who do not wish to pursue science-related courses in college to keep their science subjects to a minimum and instead take a subject of their preference (in my case this was Economics)

how significantly are my chances for admissions affected? will they literally discard my application immediately? I find this quite unfair because I've had such intensive high school courses - with IB and 9 subjects in grades 9 and 10 (with really good grades) and my SAT score is also not bad - 2080. how serious is it if I don't meet the A-G requirement? do you think I could still be accepted or is it a long shot?

It is likely less favorable than if you did have all of the a-g subjects.

but significantly less or just by a small degree? because my reason is pretty solid. between a second science and a subject I will surely pursue in college, I’d most definitely choose the latter. how would A-level students meet such requirements if they take like 3 subjects?!

My school does not offer some subjects, and thus our applicants do not fulfill the requirements. However, I do know that last year, a guy from my school got accepted into UC Berkeley. So don’t lose hope yet.

I am in an A-level school and have asked the same question to my counsellor. Basically to paraphrase, his response was “the requirements for subjects is directed ONLY towards american applicants. It does not apply at all to international applicants studying IB or A-levels.” My school has admitted students to many US schools including UCBerkeley. Those students all took 3-4 A-levels, so I think we’re safe, haha.

Also, on the UC website it states that there are adcoms that are specialized in reviewing applications from international applicants. Afterall, there are thousands of them every year.
