I completed one semester at a college, but I don't really care if those courses transfer to a new uni or not. Can I apply as a freshman to other colleges if I don't want the 5 classes I took to transfer?

Each college/university sets its own policy about this. You really do need to read each website carefully. Some will consider you a Transfer Applicant because you have more than one credit earned after high school graduation. Others will consider you a Freshman Applicant because you have completed less than one full year of college.

You do have to submit an official copy of your transcript from your first college/university when you apply. Whether or not any of those courses transfer for credit, or can be used to place you into a higher level course is entirely up to the receiving institution. What you can’t do, is pretend that you didn’t take those classes. They are permanently part of your academic history. Whenever you apply for admission to a degree program at an accredited college or university in the US you will have to send an official copy of that transcript.

There is a whole forum here just for Transfer issues. You should visit it, and read through some of the threads there. Start with the one at the top of the forum labeled “Transfer Admissions 101”.
Good luck!

Thanks! But even if I submit the transcript and some of the classes transfer, could I still be a freshman in standing because I only completed one semester?

The thing I’m worried about is having the full college experience. I think an essential part of that is being a freshman, living in the dorms, making friends early on, the whole first-year experience. I didn’t get to have that at my current college because I lived off-campus and took night classes mostly, which I see now was probably a mistake.

Even if all of your credits transfer, you still will need about 3 1/2 years to finish there so you are almost certain to be classified as a freshman student. You will have plenty of time to get the college experience. No matter how many years of college credits you have under your belt, your first year living in a dorm is still a first year living in a dorm!

Thanks! But I probably wouldn’t be living in a freshman dorm, huh? :-/ That’s what concerns me. I’ll probably be a sophomore, which would be kinda awkward.

You would be living in the freshman dorm. The only question is whether you compete in the freshman or transfer pool.

Not every college has a separate freshman dorm. In many cases all four classes live in each dorm. Since you are concerned about this issue, you should investigate the specific housing situation on each campus.
