Hi,
I am currently enrolled in both high school and a community college. I nearly have enough credits to get my Associate’s Degree in Mathematics and was wondering if there is a higher chance to be accepted into a University if I apply as a transfer since they get higher priority. But, I would be in a disadvantage and would be treated as an experienced college transfer student already. Should I apply to colleges as a transfer? Thanks.
“if there is a higher chance to be accepted into a University if I apply as a transfer”
In a word- NO.
where do you get the idea that transfers get a “higher priority”? That is not reality.
The reality is that MOST colleges admit as many Freshman students each year as the # of seniors that graduate. colleges that do accept a lot of transfer students admit fewer, but hardly any college accepts more transfer students than freshman.
So your BEST shot at admission is to apply as a freshman, when there are LOTs of slots open, and as a very accomplished freshman like you should have a good chance of acceptance. !
I’ve read on a few UC websites that transfer students get highest priority, but I’m unsure about universities in other states…
Anyway, I think you should talk to your high school counselor about which would be the better option.
Yes, UC do give higher priority to incoming transfer students. Therefore, I was wondering if I should go in as a transfer and get out of the UC in 2 years.
you need to talk to your HS counselor.
Have you met all of the UC entrance requirements?
Yes cc students have priority over other UC or cal state students, but the highest priority is new entering freshman.
I don’t know how you are eligible for both freshman and transfer students’ guidelines. Go to your colleges’ sites and see how they each define freshman and transfer students.
I am a freshman because I am still in high school but also a transfer since I have enough credits to transfer out of a community college into a UC. @“aunt bea” I didn’t know that freshman get higher priority than transfers.
Do the college courses you took in high school form a coherent frosh/soph selection that fulfills the lower division requirements for your intended college major and completes the required or recommended (often IGETC) breadth courses for the UC campus and division you are looking at? If not, then going in as a transfer is likely to be substantially disadvantageous, since you will have to immediately choose a major, and may have to take “catch up” courses in the limited time that you can stay enrolled.
If you go in as a frosh, you could still retain the option of declaring your major and graduating quickly, but you would not be required to do so.
Taking a couple of CC classes while in HS probably does not qualify you as a transfer student.
apply as a freshman, not as a transfer student- you will have many more options.
@ucbalumnus Yes, all the CC classes and AP classes I’ve taken fulfill my IGETC. Yes, I know I will have less options and will be set at a higher standard than a normal freshman entering a UC. But, I think it is worth it if I get the higher priority for applications and finishing in two years.
OP
you WONT have a higher priority for admission than FRESHMAN Applicants!
NO transfer student does!
So If you WANT to go to a UC, apply as a freshman. You will have a better chance of acceptance.
Then blast through college as fast as you are able to do so.
@menloparkmom Not sure where you are getting your information, but here is my response: http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/transfer/guarantee/index.html. I’m basically guaranteed 100% acceptance rate to UC’s.
Disregard the TAG I just stated, apparently high school students can’t do this.

you cannot be a transfer student because you have NOT taken college level classes after graduating from HS!
