I know someone who auditioned for the UCLA School of Music, and was accepted as a music major. But he is majoring in both Economics AND music performance. So what's the deal with this? Can you just get accepted to the school of music, and then decide that you want to double major in economics, for example? Note: I'm a junior in HS right now and originally I was thinking about applying only as a music major.
Thanks

Completing a degree in music performance will keep you pretty busy. There is a music business minor you can add. I think it is also possible to complete minors in other subjects. If you want to double major, plan on more than 4 years. You can’t apply to UCLA as a double major. You have to pick either music or something else. If you pick music, and don’t pass the audition, you will be denied from UCLA. If you apply for a major in Letters and Science and are denied, you will not have the chance to then audition for music. If you think you are competitive in music, I would stick with that. That is your best shot.

What I meant to ask was, if I audition and I am accepted as a music performance major, can I then choose to major in something else as well after I have been accepted (for example, economics)?

I’m not 100% sure, but I doubt you can double major across different schools. You would exceed the unit cap by a lot.

Like I said, I know for a fact that it can be done because I know someone who did it (unfortunately I don’t know him personally so I can’t contact him).

It is highly unethical for someone to apply to for a spot in the music department when they intend to switch out. You are potentially taking a spot from someone who is serious about music. And, you cannot change majors for at least a year. They will not allow it. I know that it is done but I also know that it really frowned upon. I don’t know what your instrument is but if you are good enough to be accepted at UCLA in your instrument, why would you want to do anything else?

Hi Lapugliesa, please don’t be quick to make assumptions – you probably misread my post. I didn’t say I want to switch out. . .I said I wanted to double major in music AND something else. So your previous answer is pretty much useless to me

Emailed Alfred Bradley a couple days ago but still haven’t gotten a response. Again, my question is:

If I audition for the school of music as a performance major and I am accepted, can I choose to major in something else (like economics) IN ADDITION to majoring in music performance after being admitted?

I would call UCLA admissions (after May 1st, the seniors have priority getting their questions answered now). You may be able to add a major, but it may take 6 years or a lot of summer school to do. I don’t know that they encourage a double major - my understanding is schools like Cal Poly don’t allow a double major because of the overcrowding, they need students to get in and out to make room for others…UCLA may have same philosophy, but I have never heard them being against a double major, maybe they just don’t promote the idea.Getting in to another department after being admitted would certainly have class or gpa requirements, and you might have to wait a certain amount of quarters to add it. Admissions could best answer this one.

Actually @se1997, your topic heading specifically says "Apply as a music major, and then SWITCH majors/double major. No jumping necessary. You could call or email Laura Young, Director of Enrollment Management . She could answer your question.

Hi @Lapugliesa
This is such a useless argument and you know it. I wrote switch majors/double majors-- I simply wanted to know if one or the other was possible, and afterwards in my messages I specified that ideally I would like to double major. Just because I wrote it in the title as a question does NOT imply that I will do it, that I am am unethical person, that I am a jerk, or all of the above. The only person who looks like a fool is you for making an assumption, and continuing to make that assumption even after I clarified that it is not my intent to switch out after getting a spot in the music program.

Thank you!

Hopefully, I can answer your question. My daughter applied as a Dance major within the School of Arts and Architecture. This is also the school where Music majors reside. She is currently in her second year and fulfilling the requirements to add Psychology as a double major. So, in order to add a double major (at least in psychology), you need to 1) Take some preparation courses (which also fulfilled some GE requirements), 2) Earn a minimum GPA in these preparation courses, and 3) Complete the application process to add the second major (which I won’t go into detail here). You will not be able to drop your major in Music until you have been accepted within UCLA at another department with another major. My daughter loves her Dance major and is excited to add another major which is not that difficult to do (at least within the School of Arts and Architecture). UCLA actually encourages students to double major or add a minor.
