I wonder if there is a list started or if we can start a list of those schools who require the application be submitted before scheduling an audition and schools where you can schedule the audition prior to applications being submitted. If there is an existing list available, I would love the link, if not, I thought this would be really helpful.
I don’t think a list exists BUT I believe Otterbein is the only program that specifically says to NOT apply to the university before being invited (via pre-screen) to audition. Honestly, I wish more schools would do this.
With the exception of Otterbein, I found that all BFA programs either required the application to be submitted prior to scheduling an audition OR said that you didn’t need to apply, but they couldn’t make a decision on your acceptance either way without having applied to the university.
Yes, every school that The D applied to both years with the exception of Otterbein and Texas State required an application before scheduling the audition. It may have been required at Texas State but she had a live prescreen at Moonifieds and only need to upload the prescreen/apply for the MT program afterwards to find out her prescreen results.
And remember you can apply without having all your recs and test scores. Most schools will let you go ahead and schedule an audition upon receipt of the main application even if they still need to receive those things. So go ahead and get the main app in. But if you send other items separately continue to check and follow up until you’re sure they’ve received everything required.
Ohhh do I need help. My head is spinning. Questions: If a school requiring a prescreen is at Unifieds, does that mean they are only seeing students who passed the prescreen and have appointments? In other words, no walk-ins? Can someone give me specific schools to which this applies? Also…can you walk in to a school whose prescreen you didn’t pass? I guess I’m wondering how useful the Unifieds are if everyone prescreens. Thank you.
First of all, not everyone prescreens. You definitely need to check with each of the schools in which you are interested to see if you must pass a prescreen prior to scheduling an audition. If the answer is yes, then yes, you must pass the prescreen before scheduling your audition with them at Unifieds. But each school has its own rules. You must check with each school individually.
The benefit of Unifieds has nothing to do with screening. The reason you go to Unifieds is to be able to audition for a number of different schools in one trip. This should save you time and money compared to having to travel to each of these schools individually. You need to think of unifieds just as you would on-campus auditions. You are still auditioning individually for each school and you still need to follow directions for applying and auditioning for their program.
One of the benefits of Unifieds is, if you have time, and if a school has some time available, you can possibly do some walk-in auditions for schools to which you have not already applied. Not all schools will have walk-in appointments at Unifieds. So if there are schools you definitely want to apply to, you must schedule an audition with them beforehand.
Each year is different as to which schools have time available for walk-ins. It is dependent on how many people schedule auditions with them in advance. Typically, the more well-known programs will fill up their audition slots prior to getting to Unifieds. So you any school you definitely want to audition for, you need to schedule with them well in advance. But there are always walk-ins. And which schools offer them will vary year to year. For example, some years there have been weather issues. This resulted in schools having some cancelled auditions because students couldn’t get to Unifieds due to bad weather. In that case, even schools who were hard to get an appointment with might be willing to see a walk in. But again, you shouldn’t count on that. My Ds year, there were no weather issues at Unifieds so that kind of availability was not possible.
As far as walk-ins go, some schools who required a pre-screen, but find themselves with open spots at Unifieds, may allow you to audition without having prescreened first. But this certainly is not something to expect. Again, if it is a school you for sure want to audition for make sure you have done their prescreen if required, sent in your application if required and scheduled a specific appointment with them during your time at Unifieds prior to traveling to Unifieds. I cannot stress this enough.
I would think if you did not pass a school’s prescreen you should not try to walk-in. But I guess it is always worth a conversation with them if they have time and it is a school you are really passionate about.
