Apply online or by mail?

Paper or Online?

I believe Cornell encourages students to apply Online, but mail in the Supplement (essays, etc.)

Can anyone verify/support? Thanks :O)

I applied with a paper application, but I think if I were to do it again, I would apply online. The online application goes to the college quicker, and it is easier to edit if you make a mistake (you don't have to worry about a messy application). However, I did like that I was able to look at the whole paper application and format my essays in the way I wanted. The paper application is easier for picking out mistakes rather than looking at the computer screen and doing it.

I did a mix. I did the Part 1 through regular mail however I did the Common App online. It's better online because you can make corrections to it before you submit your final copy. Also, online is safer and faster because it is all electronic and you don't have to worry about your application being 'lost' in the mail for whatever reason.

Supplements of course, have to be sent through mail so no real choice there.

As for your question about preference, I have not seen Cornell write anywhere that they prefer either. I do know other colleges and universities have preferences but Cornell, as far as I can tell, is indifferent. Important thing is to do it the way you're comfortable with.

I didn't know we can combine the ways we can send our materials. So I can do Part 1 online and send in my common application by mail?

i like the paper personally cuz its easier to include supplemental material...i personally sent a lot of additional material to schools and im not fond of sending one part online, one part mail...plus u get to really design ur layout and sort of stand out...

Yah coolz, I took a chance with it because I was strapped for time with Common App.

But they basically print it off when they get it anyway and CommonApp Online even has a little status box that tells you if they printed it or not. So it's the same either way except the time it takes to get to them.

when i saw a cornell rep, i asked her the same question and she said they gave equal weight to paper and online apps

phew. Thanks guys.

odysseus-Could you tell me where on the common app site the checkbox is? I've never seen it...

Hi justforgetme,
I sort of lied, it's not a checkbox, its actually in a table.

If you go to your checklist once you send your application, you will see in the "application status" table, a column that says "App Printed?" It should say 'yes' or 'no'. Click on "App Printed" and it tells you more info about what it is.
