apply or no? (essentially a chance me thread)

I am a white, female, Florida-resident.
I go to a nationally-recognized "gifted" school, where there is an all-honors requirement and lots of AP classes offered.

I have a 3.656 weighted (I know, super low) and I got a 1940 on my first SAT, without having taken Algebra II. I'm retaking the SAT in June, and hopefully can score about 100 points more.

I'm a 4 year rower, and a captain nominee. I'm the vice-president and a founding member of the most successful Save Darfur club in the nation, and am a member of Charity Water, Save Our Sharks, and my school's rowing club. I volunteered for the Obama campaign, and will have more than 75 hours of community service when I graduate.

I'm taking the following senior year:
Chemistry II (Organic Chem) Honors
AP Literature and Composition
Economics Honors/AP Government
Holocaust/Philosophy
Pre-Calculus Honors
AP Human Geography

I'm an extreme Auburn legacy so no help there :(

I want to major in sports management/journalism (sports journalism is the eventually job hoepfully) and it woudl be so helpful if I could go to UF.

BASICALLY, I'm sorry for the extreme post I just wanted everyone's general opinion. Any helpful hints would be awesome :) Thank you!

borderline. your extracurriculars will be your strong point, unless the ‘nationally recognized gifted school’ part happens to mean a lot to admissions.

definitely worth applying. dont let anyone tell you you cant get in, because UF’s got a reputation for being kind of unpredictable.

Well go ahead and apply. I wouldn’t say you have the strongest chance but you’re probably in the middle as aforautumn mentioned. The low GPA can really hurt you but the High SAT score and extracurriculars could get you in. As we all know many people with low credentials got in this year because of their own specific strengths (essays, family history, extracurrics etc.) so you could have a good shot at being admitted.

Applying is only 30 dollars, so why not?

^ and it’s free if you get a waiver… just apply so you can erase, would’ve-should’ve-could’ve…but didnt. good luck.

1- Class rank
2- SAT breakdown by section

Agreed, Florida does not consider the writing section yet so I would be more specific in regards to per section score

[University of Florida - Admissions](Freshman - How To Apply - University of Florida)

“A combined score of at least 1330 on the critical reading, math and writing sections of the SAT (with writing), with a minimum score of 440 on each. Effective with the 2009 entering class, the university will begin considering the writing portion of the SAT.”

Actually, Florida does look at the writing section.

Interesting

If you aregoing to be a science major but your subscores are:

Verbal: 740
Writing:740
Math:440

It’s a 1920 but…

You have a problem.

Okay, let me clear some stuff up.

Unfortunately, I don’t get a class rank. My school decided a couple of years ago that class rank is too much pressure and as a result we don’t rank. It’s a little childish and stupid, but then, so is high school. So, I can’t give you that.

Here’s the SAT breakdown…
Critical Reading 730
Math 580
Writing 640
Essay: 8
Those were without studying for the exam, or taking Algebra II. Hopefully, my math score will go up and taking AP Lang will bring my writing up to the 700s.

get Barrons SAT prep book and focus mainly on the math

its one of the easier subsections to improve

yeah if you bump your math scores up 50+ points you’ll be in a much better position.
of course GPA will still be an issue, but i would think you’ve got a >50% chance.

I’ll definitely try the Barron’s book, I have the PR one which I plan to use once finals wind down.
