My son is interested in a double major/ Chemistry and music performance.
What is the application process? Does he have to apply to each school separately as a prospective student? Or is there a place on the application to check all the schools that he is interested in applying?

I have the same question with SCA and Marshall

You have to apply separately to each major/School, as each will have individual requirements for supplements, auditions, or portfolios. Check out each major online to see what is required. When you start the Common App for USC, you will list the majors you are applying for and it will prompt you on the needed extras. Best of luck!

I got accepted this year as a Presidential Scholarship Finalist to Dornsife (for neuroscience) and I also plan to double major with music. However, I felt that I was a stronger applicant by applying to the sciences as opposed to music, because I was not sure if I would be on par with the other music applicants to the school. I suggest him applying to the school he thinks is his stronger suit FIRST, and then when he gets in, he can easily add on a second major in any school If he is equally good in both, then just pick one! You can always declare a second major later. they encourage it very much.

Keep in mind, however, that a music performance major requires an audition and is very competitive. So, it is not something that can be easily added on as a second major.

I take a different angle at this, lucy. If you apply to both majors, they can both consider you for admission. It gives you two shots. There is literally no downside, so why not try? The benefit is some majors will weigh supplements/talent and experiences and even gpas differently than others. It’s hard for anyone to comprehend what, exactly, each major is looking for most so why not open it up? It certainly doesn’t hurt. And while you can add many majors after you matriculate, the most selective schools have a similarly selective process for internal transfers and adding double majors. For BFAs, for instance, it is impossible to add a 2nd major I believe, and also tricky to impossible to add a BFA to a BA (for 2 majors) after matriculation unless you go through the rigorous audition/selection process, get admitted, and add extra years to graduation. I would suggest a BM in music performance might be similar, so why not apply to both, listing your first choice first?

@madbean you could do that? didn’t know you learn something new everyday haha

My younger son is considering applying for a double major w/ Thornton and Marshall. So I began to wonder… if he just applied to Thornton at first, is a business second major one that can easily be added later? Or not? Anyone know?
