I applied to three schools that I was pretty sure I'd get in (UNC, NC State, and Campbell). I got in all three and was offered extras at 2 of the 3.

For those just beginning your college search, I'd suggest applying to a reach school, even if you are positive you won't go there. It's just $50 bucks (don't eat out for a few days...) I say this because it will save the wondering "what if...?" What if they accepted me, and what if they offered me enough aid to attend? That's what I'm wondering about Duke right now, and it's driving me crazy. I'm sure I'll be more than happy at the school I'm going to attend as I'll be in the honors program surrounded by others who probably could have gotten into a tougher school.

Nonetheless, the only thing you have to lose is the few hours spent writing the essays and the application fee. Both of these things are negligible later in life (and by later in life, I mean a month down the road.) There's nothing to be ashamed of if you don't get in...at least you'll know.
