Should I apply to BU or Northeastern if I'm interested in studying neuroscience/cognitive studies, prelaw, or marketing?
(I know, very different fields, I'm weird)

I'm going to need financial aid and my stats are as follows:

UW: 3.97
W: 4.33
9th- 0 honors/0 AP/6 regular
10th- 1 honors/0 AP/5 regular
11th- 3 honors/3 AP/0 regular
12th- 0 honors/6 AP/0 regular
A total of 13 advanced classes out of 24, 9 APs-all the advanced classes my school offers.

SAT:2050 (CR 730, M 650, W 670)

(good ECs including writing for 2 newspapers and a website, a job, lacrosse, coaching, and being a volunteer counselor for children who have been victims of domestic violence)

I assume you know that there is no such thing as ‘pre law.’ And you should know that most universities - Northeastern and BU included - don’t have a marketing major. You study business, and can choose a marketing emphasis.

Finally you should visit both schools because each has its quirky side. BU is a more traditional university (though with a less traditional campus) while NEU’s co-op make it less traditional (though on a more traditional campus.) Clear as mud?

It’s gotten increasingly difficult to get into NEU and to get significant aid. And BU is and always has been,a bit infamous for giving very little in aid.

Yes I’m aware that there is no pre-law and that marketing isn’t a formal major-those are just my “areas of academic interest” to steal the words of the common app
I would apply to both but I have a limit to the schools I’m allowed to apply to and I’ve already filled my other slots. I have one spot left and I want to use it to add an urban option to my list and BU and Northeastern have been my favorites I’m just having a hard time deciding between them.
Thanks for your help!

A limit to the amount of schools you are allowed to apply to? That doesn’t make sense. If it’s a financial concern then you should speak with the financial aid offices to see if they can waive the application fees. But if it’s some kind of limit from your high school, you need to argue that. It is completely unfair to limit the amount of schools someone can apply to and any school that has one is just being lazy about the paperwork.

Yeah, I agree with the above. My school sent in fee waivers for all my apps. Definitely apply to both - BU has a 90% financial aid rate yet they gave me almost no good aid, while NU did.

The limit is a parent enforced thing. But it seems that applying to both seems to be the unanimous vote so I guess I’ll try bargaining with them.
Thanks again for all the input.

While I understand the reasoning behind limiting the number of schools one applies to (either to reduce application costs or to simply keep the number of applications within a reasonable limit), I think its foolish to have to pick one of two institutions simply because you’ve run out of ‘space’. Obviously I don’t know your situation, but if you’re similarly interested in them, you should give them the same chance.

My advice is to research all the schools that you plan to apply to, as well as Northeastern and Boston University a little more. Since you aren’t set on one major yet, other factors such as overall academics or the campus life, etc. should probably hold more weight over your decision!
