Apply Undecided or Engineering?

Hello, I recently began filling out information on the penn state application website and it asks what major I intend to apply as. Now, I am really wanting to go into engineering however I am afraid the 580 Math on my highest SAT (1940 overall) will make them reject me. So, I am wondering what your advice would be: apply as engineering and hope for the best or apply as undecided and feel confident about getting in. Are there any drawbacks to applying undecided? Thanks!

They wont look specifically at your math score and make judgment on what your success will be in an engineering major. The University will look at your entire application. If you are good enough to get into UP and you apply early you should have no problem getting in. You aren’t declared “engineering” until your jr year.

If you are accepted into the College of Engineering you are considered an engineering student as a freshman. You will be advised by engineering faculty during FTCAP and invited to attend the programs run by the department. You would generally apply to a specific engineering department during your sophomore spring though there is at least one department that requires application during your freshman year. This is not to say that you can’t switch into the COE later, but there are advantages to starting out in the College.

Alright thanks a lot for responding, I’m going to apply as engineering :)
