Apply Wharton ED or the College?

My D really wants to apply to Wharton ED. She really doesn’t want to apply ED to the college. Do you think she is a better than the avg. candidate or is she just not being realistic?

She is a junior and is #1 or #2/208, with a weighted GPA of 103+/100. Her high school is in central PA- does that help? She has already been accepted to LBW and is attending this summer.

She has tons of quality leadership and ECs:

Habitat for Humanity- VP (11), President elect (12)
National Honors Society- President elect (12)
YMCA Youth & Gov’t - Lawyer (11) voted best law team 2004
Supreme Court Justice (12)
Big Brothers/Sisters - President elect (12)
Student Gov’t - Secy (9), President (10), Running for Student Body Pres (12)
Organizer of a Memorial Fundraising Dinner -Ass’t Chair(11) Chair (12)
BBYO - BBG - VP (10), (11) Co-organizes regional conventions(10,11)
Key Club, Amnesty Intl
Varsity Tennis Team

She has lots of awards too:

Scholastic Writing- Silver Key (national level) (10)
Gold Key (regional level) (10)
Silver Key (regional level) (11)
10th grade top Algebra II student
9th grade top biology student
11th grade top ?? student (s/b trig, stats at least)
2004 JCC maccabi games, austin tx. - gold medal doubles tennis

Other:
Lifeguard (2003, 3004, 2005)
Jr Prom Court (Can you actually put this down???)

She took the march SATs so she doesn’t have her scores but they’re probably around 2100. This is probably her weakest area. SAT IIs will be taken in May.

Schedule:
APs - US hist, stats (11)
AP’s- Calc BC, English, Spanish, Gov"t (12) and Number Theory(AP weight)

Does she have a good shot? Is there anything besides the SAT scores that she needs to improve, change or add? Thanks

If she doesn't have a shot, who does?!

Ok I'll reply since your daughter sounds a lot like me..as in her stats (btw, I wouldn't put the prom thing down). I live in NE Philadelphia (Penn loves Philly kids) and I got into the college. I was thinking of applying to Wharton but didn't think I'd get in and I really rather have a liberal arts background to see what else is out there and perhaps get my MBA if I'm into business. However, someone I know did get into Wharton and his SAT's were like 1410 (maybe?) and was 3rd in his class. I have no idea about leadership and clubs and that stuff, but I don't think it was anything spectacular. I'd say make sure she has spectacular essays for Wharton and some good recommendations. No one seems to think they're important besides me but I really think they are. See if she's positive about Wharton. My friend wasn't sure she'd get in but Penn was her dream school so she's majoring in Econ at the college next year and thinking about transfering into Wharton for her Soph year. Your daughter could always do that too.. she'll just have to work hard to have an awesome GPA her freshmen year. But yea, she definitely has a shot. And by shot I mean most probably get in. Sometimes there's a fluke and random people don't get in for unknown reasons, you know? Ok well hope that was helpful.

Her HS usually sends 2 Penn ED every year ( although this year, no one got into Penn)- Never any Wharton acceptances. However I'm not sure if anyone has ever applied. I think her HS may put her at a disadvantage. It is a competitive school but most of the kids are looking for scholarship money and go to the lesser well known schools. Only about 5 a year go to the top tier schools.

Well just to give you an idea about my school, I go to a private (well parochial but same thing sort of) school with about 670 kids in my class. 5 kids got into Penn and not many really apply to top tier schools. Most people I think it's because they don't think they can afford it which I don't think is necessarily true. Most people I know are going to small and/or affordable schools like Gwennyd Mercy, Temple, etc. If you're concerned she won't get into Wharton but wants to go to Penn really badly I'd say just go in through the college.

She only wants Wharton. If no one from her school has ever been accepted, in let's say the last 10 years to Wharton, does that mean that she has a very slim chance of acceptance? Her HS is in Central PA, does Wharton ever favor PA students?

Hmm I am not sure about her chances based on her school's history. And about Wharton favoring PA students.. unsure. I know Penn loves Philadelphia students and probably PA students, but I don't know about Wharton really.

I was accepted RD to Wharton. I had more APs and college classes, but my ECs probably weren't quite as good as your daughter's (I actually didn't have any business type ECs at all...). I think if your daughter really wants to go to Wharton, then she should apply ED. Bottom line is she has as good of a shot as anyone else, so it won't hurt to try. Also, I doubt anyone from my school has ever gone to Wharton, at least not in the last decade, so I don't think your daughter would be at a disadvantage there.

Would Wharton favor too much leadership. My D was considering applying to a Regional Leadership program that is open to 4 students at 10 area high schools. It is selective but because of her strong resume there is no doubt that she would be accepted. She obviously doesn't need this program but it's something that she thinks might be really fun (It meets at the PA state Capital). They have business leaders as speakers and hands on workshops. Unfortunately, it is once a month during school hours and it could be a lot work for her to make up(especially calc). My question is would Wharton see too much leadership on her resume and look at her negatively? She has not decided whether she will apply to the program- she still has 3 weeks.

Here's my two cents: I just got into Wharton, class of 2009. I applied ED and was deferred. After my deferral, I became really despondent. I kept saying to myself, "See, I knew I should have applied to the college." But, you know what? If I had applied to the college ED and gotten in, I would have been kicking myself for the rest of my life for not trying Wharton ED. I got into Wharton RD and was ecstatic. So, here's my advice: Tell your daughter to go for what she really wants, and if that means Wharton, then so be it. Go for it and don't look back!

Thanks Christopherson- She told me that exact same thing. If she applied to the college and was accepted, she would always wonder if she could have been admitted to Wharton.

Chris,

Great advice. Congratulations on your acceptance!

Thanks audiophile, and good luck to your daughter Savvymom!

My 2 cents. She has a chance, so definitely have her apply to Wharton.
