Hey there!

I really like the sound of Slave Regina. I want to go to the New England area and I like the looks of the campus. I just have a few concerns:

1) I go to boarding school now in VA. It's a pretty good one, but it's expensive and since that's the case, my parents want me to go in-state/public so they don't have to pay much. How is your financial aid? Could I get a scholarship for a unique talent? I jump rope competitively at national tournaments (AAU Junior Olympics and USAJR Nationals) but that's really my only sport, so I don't have a chance with the normal school sports. Is this plausible?

2) I have gone to 3 different high schools for my 4 years of HS. Will this affect my chances?

3) I was in EXTREMELY competitive schools for my first two years of high school (Chapel Hill High School, and East Chapel Hill High School [Nationally ranked public schools]) so in turn, my grades weren't the greatest because the schools were so hard. They were mostly B's with a few A's and C's. My GPA was a 3.4 UW and 3.7 Weighted. Now at boarding school, we're on the 100 pt. scale and my grade average is about an 85. Will they take this into consideration? How do my grades stack up? (I am taking mostly AP courses and a few honors and very few regular.)

4) My SAT/ACT scores...which should I submit, or both?
SAT Math: 590
Sat Reading:570
SAT Writing: 570
ACT Composite: 25

5) On the SR web site on the Virtual Tour all they talked about was their buildings and their historical significance. I don't care about that as much as academics. What comes first to them?

Also what is the campus vibe like? I want to be a doctor, but with my grades I'm not sure if I could do pre-med. I have a job at Duke University Medicine doing DNA research in an Alzheimer's lab, doing karyotyping and looking at DNA samples. Will this help me get into pre-med? Should I put that on my application?

I know this is a long message but if you could answer as much as you can, I would REALLY appreciate it. I would really like to hear from someone at Salve Regina or someone familiar with it.

Thanks again!

I want to be a doctor, but with my grades I’m not sure if I could do pre-med. I have a job at Duke University Medicine doing DNA research in an Alzheimer’s lab, doing karyotyping and looking at DNA samples. Will this help me get into pre-med? Should I put that on my application?

YES!You got a job at Duke, one of the most prestigous universities in the world. You will definitley get in Pre-Med. I think you have a fair chance of getting into Salve Regina, I’m just really curious why you want to go?
Have you considered University of Vermont, it has a fairly good pre-med program?

It seems like an interesting school. I love Rhode Island and the New England area, and I want to be on the water. How are the academics? Are those reasons too superficial to go there?

And yes UV is also on my list! It’s one of my top choices.

Hi Drew!

I will do my best to answer all of your questions as concisely as I can in this forum. Please do not hesitate to find the counselor in your territory and contact them directly for more information. You can find our counselor listing here: [Salve Regina University - Meet Your Counselor](http://salve.edu/admissions/undergraduate/meetYourCounselor)

First off, let me give you a better picture of our average accepted student. The average GPA we typically accept is a 3.2 on a 4.0 scale; a solid B student. We do use a weighted GPA, so if you took any honors or AP courses in high school, they have a higher point value and make a difference in our calculation. Salve is a test optional school for all majors with the exception of Education and Nursing. However, if you choose to submit test scores, our average SAT score is an 1100 on the reading and math portions only; our average ACT score is a 24. As far as your concerns regarding your 3 different high schools - this will not negatively affect you. We do take into consideration the rigor of your curriculum and course selection, as well as the nature in which you handled transition from school-to-school. Also, about 80% of our students receive financial aid.

Pre-med at Salve is not a major, it is an advisory program in which you will major in whatever you would like (most students interested in pre-med opt for Biology or Chemistry) and work with an advisor who instructs you on the necessary course selection required for applying to medical school post-graduation. Salve does have all of the courses one would need to be qualified to do so.

Lastly, I’d like to address your concern regarding our virtual tour. The Salve community regards VERY highly our academic progams and standards. Salve is a teaching institution and this is portrayed very clearly by our faculty whose #1 priority is student learning. You can also see this in our student:faculty ratio and our small class sizes. What you saw reflected in our virtual tour is our pride in the unique, historical, and cultural nature of our campus. Our location in the historical district of Newport is one of a kind, and sets us apart from other colleges and universities.

Hopefully one day you are able to visit us and see all the things we’ve discussed here, and everything else that Salve has to offer :)
