Applying after Nov 1

If I didnt get my part 1 in my nov 1, and i submit it by the Dec 1 deadline, how does this effect me. I really didn't know it had to be in by nov 1, cause I was just focusing on my early decision app to penn, and hadn't really even decided where else I was applying for sure. So I want to apply to Maryland and try to get their full ride, or something close to it, but now I'm worried at how applying past part 1 priority will hurt me. I have high schores and rank and good essays and ECs...I would definitely get in under normal cirumstances, but now I'm not so sure...

I think you should be ok. On the Maryland Day visit, the admissions counselor told the audience the Nov. 1st was a "soft" deadline...meaning they aren't as strict about it being late. The Dec. 1st is a "hard" deadline...meaning if it's not in by then, you go in the Regular Decision pile. I'm not sure about you getting a full ride or not, but you should be fine as long as part 1 and 2 are in before Dec. 1.

What are your stats/recs etc that you think you will qualify for the full ride?

I dont think I will, but I think I have a chance to maybe get the key/banner scholarship...problem is i posted a thread asking if people knew avg stats of people who got it and no one had an answer...but..

Rank: 13/474
GPA: 3.76 (UW), 5.77 (W out of 6)
SAT: 800M, 720V, 740W
SATII: 800 math 1, 790 math 2, 800 physics
AP: Physics-B 5, Calc AB 5, Stat 4, Psych 4
EC: Varsity swimming (captain), varsity tennis, math team, FBLA, REBEL
A bit of work: I tutor people in physics and work for my year-round tennis coach; Volunteered at that coaches tennis camp bout 240 hours

Also some minor various awards but that about covers it...I wasnt trying to sound cocky that I think I can get a full ride, I'm really just not sure what goes into getting that scholarship as far as your scores and ECs and such and so I thought since mine are above average I could apply and hope for the best...do you have any input angstridden..some info you know..or were you just curious of my stats as I was shooting for the scholarship

The Banneker Key is a full ride scholarship. I was just curious as to your stats because I know alot of kids in the gemstones/honors program and though they got scholarships, they did not get the full ride.

The one gal I know that was offered the Banneker Key got a 1600 on the SAT's and ended up going to MIT. However another student I know was invited to interview and got a much lower SAT. He did not get the award but he was given another scholarship plus a scholarship from the department he was entering and ended up with close to a full ride. So its possible that way also.

The scholarship depends on stats of course but also extra curricular and interview and the application.

Good luck and let us know how you do!

lishnik, are you in-state? they are usually more inclined to give the BK scholarship to in-state applicants. i myself am a BK scholar from potomac (instate). PM me if you want to hear about my interview/application experience or want some advice.

Scagneas do you mind sharing your stats? If so I understand of course....

sat: 1590
gpa: 3.99, wgpa: 4.99
hook: math and internationalism. i scored the highest in my school on the AIME test and my dad is a diplomat, so i spent my entire life moving around the world. i almost fainted with happiness when i saw the essay question where they wanted you to write 3 pages about how you'd contribute to the diversity at maryland. this is also why i got into global communities (although each year their acceptance rate is 100% - less people apply than are spaces in the program.)

class rank: 1/150 in the best high school in canada
EC's: edited 4 literary publications in my school, entrepreneurial society founder, ambassadors (similar to UMD orientation) program founder, varsity bball/tennis, debate, MUN, and community service steward. several awards for highest GPA, perfect IB point total, and math awards at my school.

additional: i did a summer business program at the wharton school of business at the university of pennsylvania. i was also accepted to harvard, yale, columbia, brown, wharton, berkeley, NYU stern, cornell, babson w/ full ride, and was rejected by princeton. i told them i was accepted by harvard ED (that wasnt true - i applied RD) during my BK interview so i guess that convinced them to give me the scholarship.

All I can say is WOW!
How impressive!

Now what made you opt for UMD over harvard, yale etc. Are you saying you told them you were accepted ED to Harvard before you got accepted?

i meant EA (early action not decision) and yea, i told them before i got accepted ;)

Whatever happened to honor me boy?
.........Are you not in HONORS and gemstones..?

Ok ..now what made you opt for UMD over other options?

well, its free. at most other schools i visited (harvard and wharton particularly) they are VERY elitist. harvard really has an air of arrogance to it; wharton is simply far too cut throat (its also on a curve. i know i could get a 4.0 there, but getting a 4.0 at UMD is far easier.)

yale is obsessed with harvard. the harvard-yale relationship is much like the US-canada one... yale has a major inferiority complex in relation to harvard.

so, i chose UMD. and i love it. plus, the fact that i am in all the programs makes me stand out while at harvard etc i would be merely above average - at UMD, i am at the top.

I am glad you LOVE it! Isn't it great to know you made a good match!
