Has anyone applied as a sociology major to any UC school?
Or does anyone know statistics?

If so, please describe/list! :)
I'm a first year and I want to set my goals and all that good stuff.

Thanks!

i transferred to Berkeley as a soc major...if you have any specific questions about Cal & the soc major, pm me & i'll be happy to answer them =)

I did, to UCLA, UCB, and UCSD. Go to assist.org and look up all the correlating class for your CCC and the UC you are applying. For UCLA the average GPA of admits for 2008 was a 3.62 so I would recommened getting at least that and higher.

I got in to UCSD, UCSB, and UCR as a Sociology major (I chnged it Psychology after I strted at UCSD, though)

I had only a 3.2, but I transferred from a community college and it's easier to get in as a transfer student, so I don't know much about freshman admissions, but getting in to like UCSD, UCLA, or UCB will definitely require at least a little more than a 3.2. You can probably get into UCR or UCM with a 3.2. I don't know about UCSB, UCI, or UCD, or UCSC

Yeah, I'm looking to transfer to UCLA or Cal.
But I don't think I did too well this semester. I got a 3.5 and I'm def. looking to raise that.

Is it a smarter decision to complete all the pre-reqs before I APPLY or does it matter? I mean, there aren't that many, but I want to double major after I transfer so there are a handful of courses I have to take.

i applied to berkeley as sociology major and i was wondering what kind of gpa/stats you had to get in??

my transferable GPA was a 3.69 when I was accepted to Cal as a soc major in 2007 & my husband was accepted in 2008 also as a soc major w/ a 3.68... however I have had two classmates w/ a lower GPA, one w/ a 3.3 & the other w/ a 3.4, both had extenuating circumstances that were noted in their personal statements... the prereqs are important, however most CCC do not offer the evaluation of evidence prereq (soc 5) so most of us had to take it when we got to Cal and they even mentioned that at Calso that they do not penalize you on this since they expect most soc majors not to have that until they get there. If you were lucky enough to be at a CCC that offers that prereq ... you have a big advantage for two reasons, more prereq completed than most of the applicants and that class has to be taken to even declare the major at Cal... you can apply even if your finishing up your prereq in the spring semester before transfer, however I do not advise taking stats right before transfer as they are becoming more strict w/ that particular prereq

Great info!! thanks! if there are more people who applied to Cal or UCLA as a sociology mjor and were accepted, please post ur stats/gpa... info etc... i will greatly appreciate it!

gf applied to both with a 3.8ish gpa

i have a question... basically im done with all my ge and prerequsites for sociology.. will it make a difference if i take additional soc class in the spring semester?? i know the grade wont count but is it worth taking the risk of taking an academic class (soc class) in the spring rather than an relatively easy class (like some computer class or something) also.. the soc class im trying to take is not a uc tranferable course so does that mean it wont make a difference or wat?? is it better to take a uc tranferable soc class??

if its a non UC transferrable class, it won't matter because they won't even look at it

but doesnt it look good on the transcript if u take additional soc class?? even if it doesnt transfer?? it wont show up at all or wat??

check assist.org for major requirements and focus on them first and then finish igetc and you can check stats on uc pages that list them

Thanks a lot, luvtoolearn for that bit of info. There was this Cal representative at my CCC who said that you needed to complete ALL pre qs before transfer or they weren’t going to except you, but now that I know I’m not the only one who goes to a school that doesn’t offer soc 5, I’ll apply to Cal, but to give it a shot :)

can someone chance me, please!
I’m an international student, cc transfer
major: Sociology
schools applied: Berkeley, UCLA, UCSD
and GPA before fall’11 is 3.55
got all A’s in fall, brings GPA up to 3.722
only three pre-reqs for berkeley
Socio 1 - A
Stats - A
Socio 5 - currently taking
essay: very strong, as what people told me
ECs: very related to the major

please chance, I really wanna get into Cal but my GPA might be too low… thanks!!

Applied for Fall 2012 —> Berk.
GPA: 3.73//MAJOR GPA: 4.0

Sociology 1: A
Sociology 3: A (not a pre-req)
Sociology 4: Currently taking
Sociology 6: A (not a pre-req)
Statistics: A

CC did not offer Soc 5

To answer some of your questions:
–Major is not impacted at Berk.
–@DKH: I assume it will look better if you do more than what is required.
–@itsokay: good stats, I think you have a very good chance of getting in.

Also, how are the sociology classes at Berkeley? Thanks!

Lol I hope you know DKH’s post was from 09

Looks good for you, I’d say! I had a low GPA and still got in at Cal. I’m a sociology major. I didn’t even have Soc 5 under my belt! I took it at Cal, no biggie.

@feesha724 did you TAG? and what year did you apply?

By the way, I just applied to UCI, UCSD, UCR, and UCSB with Sociology and a 3.34 gpa. My counselors all said I’m 90% in at UCSD.

I’ve looked at many threads and saw someone get into UCSD with a 3.27 last year with NO TAG and I saw someone get wait listed with a 3.6 at UCSD. I guess it all depends on how many people are trying to get into your major.

lol just realized this was an old thread lololol
