Does applying as a sophmore hurt your chances? I'm going to be a freshman next school year and I am hoping to apply to "the usual bunch" (HADES and any other schools that look good) of schools and was wondering what the acceptance rate is for sophmore year at HADES (if they release that info.).

I believe most schools still save spots for incoming sophomores -- meaning the class size grows in that year. Coming in to prep schools in 10th grade was very common in the past, as many students came from a "country day school" that ended after 9th grade.

I'm wondering what the numbers are -I forget on which school's site, (might have been Deerfield?) but it said that 20-40 10th graders are accepted with an acceptance rate of around 27%, so I really wonder what those numbers are : -/

I applied as an 11th grader this year and found out the hard way that most schools only accept about 5-10 and some only 1 or 2! I was told that it would have been much easier in the 10th. Yes they accept fewer then in grade 9 but they also have fewer applications. Also the schools like to have you for more than 2 years.

I got in as a sophomore and I don't really have any major hooks. The admit rate is about the same sense they take less from a smaller applicant pool.

You could consider repeating 9th grade if you want. I wouldn't advise it though since your chances will still be about the same for 10th grade.

I got in as a sophomore this year @ Thacher and Brooks.
And I do not think that it made a significant difference
(my sister is applying as a sophomore this year)

My advice is that you should also consider great schools in the West
e.g. Thacher, Cate, Stevenson etc.
These schools are also incredibly academic and I found they also concentrate on non-academic activities
Hope this helps~

I would probably rather just attend the high school I would be attending at home (it's a pretty good school with a decent course selection) if I would need to apply as a 9th Grade repeat; I have already gotten my classes at this high school and they're all advanced/honors classes. I would just like to be able to have more options with languages/music becasue my school only offers French, German, Spanish and Latin (of which I am taking Latin) and I would like to take a few courses in Russian, Arabic, or Greek to supplement my Latin.

I was accepted as a 10th grade student at Exeter, Choate, and the NMH this year. Things kept me from applying last year, so it seemed right. It can't hurt to apply, especially if you have a safety school (public or private day school, etc.).
