I was wondering if the fact that I'm applying as a sophomore makes it any harder for me to get into Taft specifically.

On their website it says they have 95 freshman and 165 sophomore, does this mean the class of '12 will open up and have a decent amount of spots?

Do they give out information such as how many applicants/spots they have?

Most boarding schools increase their student body by a large amount from 9th to 10th grade. It depends on the school, but some might tell you what the spot situation is like or what most do is give you something vague.

i personally think that's a lot for any school. an increase of 70 sophomores in a freshmen class of 95 is pretty big, in my opinion. it's around 40%, which is on the high end of what schools usually accept. most accept 25-40% of their original freshmen class, which isn't that bad in my opinion.

My son just entered BS as a sophmore. We interviewed at a ton of schools. We asked all but 1 that question. Some will put stats on their web site and if that is what Taft says, I'd say it's true. Most schools do in fact, increase their 10th grade by 25-40% over 9th grade. Not one school blinked at the question. Only one didn't have a specific answer (the one he's at actually) and said that it depends on the applicants that they don't have an exact number they shoot for each year.
We asked in the interview really on the basis of how easy it is to fit in socially and athletically when you start in 10th grade. It never felt like an awkward question.

A side note - the one school we FORGOT to ask at, turns out had very few openings due to over yeild the previous year. We were surprised at a waitlist there, yet would not have been if we'd asked.
