Applying Early Action vs. Regular Decision (Dilemma)

I am debating between EA or just regular. I dont have the best gpa right now so that is a reason i am favoring regular decision. With that being said, most of the colleges i went to said that they strongly recommend applying early action as it is much less competitive compared to regular. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I don't really know what to do right now. Thanks!

Have you read: <a href=“Early Decision and Early Action – Counselors | College Board”>http://professionals.collegeboard.com/guidance/applications/early

@gibby i have but the colleges i looked at like purdue and u michigan specifically said that applying early action increases chances by a lot. that article doesn’t really take increases chances into account very much.

Early action ONLY increases your chances if you are a competitive applicant. Without knowing your stats, but just your comment of “I don’t best gpa right now” I don’t know if Purdue and UMich are reach schools for you. What is your GPA, approximate class rank (top 10%, top 15%, top 25%) and your test scores?

@gibby umich is a reach right now and purdue is a high match. with that being said, when i visited purdue they said applying early action makes the process less competitive and encouraged it for all applicants regardless of reach or safety status.

But i do appreciate your response and feedback, thank you.

You need the time to get your GPA up (you would be in the bottom 10% at Purdue, bottom 3% at UMich). Go RD.

thanks for the feedback. what would you say for a place with rolling admissions where applying early has a clear benefit?

Look at it statistically. One more semester of grades vs. the 6 semesters you already have as a high school student can’t result in much of a bump in your GPA. And your test scores are very low for Michigan. Honestly… I wouldn’t apply there if I were you, it isn’t going to work out and you will spend time on their app that you could have spent on match schools.

@intparent yeah i know michigan is a reach i was only applying as a reach i didnt expect to get in

They are a high reach… your time would be better spent on other applications.

mbarwh, I agree with your assessment.

Right now you don’t have the goods for Michigan. No point in applying early or regular. It’s not a reach, it’s a non-starter. Looking at our Naviance from our public school in Massachusetts that your chances for Michigan are zero. No disrespect intended.

Purdue though I think would give you an advantage applying early. I saw your list in your first post, and I think it’s a good one. Apply to Pitt early too. If you don’t get in, you can ask to have your application reevaluated if more input becomes available.

Thanks for the feedback! Yeah I am thinking about taking Michigan off my list and once my September act scored comeback depending on how good they are I will apply after that or wait until my October sat but yeah thanks!

That isn’t the same as taking them off your list… Where else besides Michigan and Purdue do you plan to apply? What is your home state?

Connecticut Is my home state and this is some of my list

University of Hartford - safety

Then

Penn state
Rutgers
Stony brook
Purdue
Upitt
Virginia tech - reach I know
Uconn

That’s most of it but I’m not too interested in the schools from my state

What is your financial situation? Have you run net price calculators for these schools with your parents?

Yeah if I went to upitt I would have my junior and senior year tuition free due to a tuition exchange and going to uhart would be free for me. The rest of the schools aren’t very expensive, relatively, as their prices cap at about 45k. I don’t qualify for financial aid and I will be paying for a portion of it.

I saw that you wanted to study CS. You might give UConn a second look, though I don’t know how difficult it is to get in in-state.

5 years ago it used to be really easy but now It is considerably more difficult also upitt would be about the same price in the end with junior and senior year tuition free. Uconn is about 28.5k in state.
